Excerpt from Practical Loom Fixing For fabrics, such as sheetings, print cloths, lawns, mulls and other fabrics that are woven on two harness shafts, the plain loom is used. This loom has the shedding cams on the bottom shaft in the loom and only fabrics that are made with two harness shafts can be made on same. When fabrics such as drills, denims, hickory stripes or twill goods have to be made, the same loom can be used with the addition of an auxiliary shaft to carry the shedding cams, the cams being driven from the bottom shaft in the loom. Excerpt from Cotton Loom Fixing The author has been a weaver, loom fixer, second hand and overseer, and is now a designer in a large New England cot ton mill. His experience has been wholly on cotton goods, embracing all kinds of cotton looms from the plain loom to the jacquard, having managed full sections of all types. He is instructor in one of the most practical textile schools in the United States. A book on practical loom fixing should be as free from technicalities as possible. The reader should be led directly to the heart of the subject. The men who are to benefit from such a book are usually working hard in the mills and at the close of the day's work are not in a condition to study or understand a mass of technical details. The object of the book is to make better workmen, get them interested and keep them interested so they will take a greater interest in their work in the mill. In this way the readers are made to feel that there is more to the art of weaving and fixing than merely throwing in a shuttle or using a wrench. Excerpt from Practice in Weaving and Loom-Fixing: A Complete Manual for the Weave-Room Sunless you have one or two unsightly pieces of picking-stick to brace it down, the chances are that you will have to crawl under the loom very often to tighten the box and bark your knuckles. File across the ribs until your straight-edge shows them to be even, care being taken lest you get them slanting from either side. Fitting the pin - In 'putting the box on, take time enough to fit a good pin through both box and frame, and in such a manner as to draw the box down, so that it fits snug on the top of the frame. This is often carelessly done, and the pin, when holding the box up too high, pre vents it from obtaining a bearing on the top of the frame as well as the side. If this is the case, you cannot keep it tight, no matter how hard you tighten up the bolts. Do the job well, taking time enough for it, and you will save yourself much disagreeable duty. Excerpt from Carding and Spinning: A Book for Practical Mill Men Several years ago I published a book called loom-fixing and Weaving, which treated the subject in a thoroughly practical manner. This book has been very favorably received, and the second edition is now almost exhausted. From time to time I have received many inquiries for a book on carding and spinning, written on the same general lines, but no such book could be found. To fill this demand, the present work has been written, and if by simply being read it imparts information which has been acquired by many years experience, the object of the writer has been attained. Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Weaving and Designing of d104ile Fabrics: With Chapters on the Principles of Construction of the Loom, Calculations and Colour The manufacture Of worsted is supposed by some to have preceded that of woollen, and in support of this the writer Of the article in Rees' Cyclopaedia says the long stapled wool suited to the comb seems more spontaneously the produce Of uncultivated sheep than short wool, which is to be manufactured by carding. Some writers suppose the Argali species to be the original sheep. Prof. Archer says, The fact that the sheep has been so long domesticated, has caused it to be a matter Of uncertainty whether it has been derived from any Of the existing animals Of the genus 0712's. Many have entertained the opinion that it is the same animal as the Argali, 0722's Ammon, Linn., a native of the mountains of Central Asia, and a great weight of evidence in favour Of that supposition is obtained from the circumstance, that all the tribes Of people who have from time immemorial dwelt on the plains surrounding those mountains have always been pastoral in their habits and occupations. Still, however, there is no positive proof that our sheep was derived either from the Argali or any other known wild species, and the probability has been much lessened by the recent discoveries Of the remains Of sheep, mingled with stone weapons of a people who existed under such different conditions Of the earth's surface, that we may assume with as much probability that they were the progenitors Of the Asiatics, as that the latter were their ancestors. And Dr. Carpenter, in his Zoology, says the Argali is not the original sheep. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Ideal Automatic Loom In a word it is a strictly practical machine, built by practical men for practical users, and the thousands in stalled within the few years of its existence and the results obtained by the mills Operating them, together with the fact that nearly every mill has placed repeat orders, are incontestable evidence of the validity of the claims made for this loom. The success of the Ideal loom is due not solely to its automatic features, but in a great measure to the loom itself. Previous to the advent of the Ideal the scope of an automatic weft changing loom was limited and maintenance expensive. This was due largely to the fact that attention had been concentrated on the development of the auto matic mechanism instead of the loom itself, or in other words, the weaving mechanism was made of secondary im portance. Excerpt from Cotton Weaving: Its Development, Principles, and Practice The present work is an exposition of the development, principles, and practice of the weaving division of the trade, as the former volume was of the Spinning division. In its execution the writer has adhered to the plan of the former work, which has received the emphatic approval of all readers interested in the subject. If there be any dif ference it will be found in the fuller and more careful exposition of the origin and development of the subsidiary processes, and of the invention and improvement of the series of machines employed in this section of the trade.
