Excerpt from Investigations Concerning Infectious Diseases Among Poultry The investigations, of which an account is presented in this bulletin, open up a new field for scientific inquiry. While the work which has been accomplished is but the first step, it reveals how little has been known and how much is to be learned in regard to the diseases of birds. The greater part of the losses from infectious diseases in the poultry yard may probably be prevented by the intelligent application of proper sanitary measures. Until the nature of these diseases is clearly understood, however, it is impossible to intelligently formulate preventive measures or to prescribe successful methods of treatment. The financial investment in domesticated birds is of such magnitude, and the products are marketed in such vast quantities, and are so essential to the well being of every citizen that the problems affecting this industry are deserving of the most careful study and investiga tion. The researches herein reported have been made in the hope and expectation that they would be continued until practical means of pre venting the common infectious diseases are placed within the reach of all engaged in the poultry industry.
