Excerpt from Wolfiana: A Potpourri of Facts and Fantasies, Culled From Literature Relating to the Life of James Wolfe, Arranged by John Clarence Webster in This Year of Grace, the Bi-Centenary Anniversary of Wolfe's Birth, 1927 It would not be out of place for the United States to celebrate the two hundredth anniversary of one whose vic tory at Quebec so greatly affected the destinies of the Amer ican Colonies. In Boston, on Sept. 13th, 1859, under the auspices of the New England historic-genealogical Society, the one hundredth anniversary of the capture of Quebec and death of Wolfe was celebrated in the House of Representatives of the State of Massachusetts, and was attended by both bran ches of the Legislature. A memorable oration was delivered by Lorenzo Sabine, in which was emphasized the impor tance of the Quebec victory in determining the institutions, history and character of the whole future of America. His analysis of Wolfe's character and his estimate of Wolfe's professional accomplishments are not excelled in the entire range of literature relating to that great soldier's career. Charles Ritchie’s first volume of diaries, The Siren Years, created a sensation when it was published in 1974. Besides winning the Governor General’s Award for Non-fiction, it was hailed by reviewers on both sides of the Atlantic. An Appetite for Life, his second volume, first published in 1977, deals with his youth in Halifax and his career at Oxford—the years when Charles Ritchie turned from a callow, blundering youth into a callow, blundering young man. As these diaries show, Charles Ritchie had a sharp eye, a keen ear, a highly developed sense of the absurd, and—despite his unhappy knack of landing flat on his face —a thorough “appetite for life.” This is not only a hilariously funny book, but it presents a vivid picture of two worlds—Halifax and Oxford in the mid-twenties—that are now long gone. It also introduces us to an astonishing range of characters, but the most astonishing of all is the young Charles Ritchie himself.

A deeply researched exploration of the technology, aesthetics, and politics of Soviet film during the transition from silent to sound. As cinema industries around the globe adjusted to the introduction of synch-sound technology, the Soviet Union was also shifting culturally, politically, and ideologically from the heterogeneous film industry of the 1920s to the centralized industry of the 1930s, and from the avant-garde to Socialist Realism. In The Voice of Technology: Soviet Cinema’s Transition to Sound, 1928–1935, Lilya Kaganovsky explores the history, practice, technology, ideology, aesthetics, and politics of the transition to sound within the context of larger issues in Soviet media history. Industrialization and centralization of the cinema industry greatly altered the way movies in the Soviet Union were made, while the introduction of sound radically altered the way these movies were received. Kaganovsky argues that the coming of sound changed the Soviet cinema industry by making audible, for the first time, the voice of State power, directly addressing the Soviet viewer. By exploring numerous examples of films from this transitional period, Kaganovsky demonstrates the importance of the new technology of sound in producing and imposing the “Soviet Voice.” “Kaganovsky’s research is impeccable. Not only does she reference virtually all English-language writing on her subject, she also has combed the archives, unearthing personal stories, government records, filmmakers’ notes, press reviews from the period, and other previously untranslated documents.” —CineMontage
