Excerpt from The American Portrait Gallery: With Biographical Sketches of Presidents, Statesmen, Military and Naval Heroes, Clergymen, Authors, Poets, Etc;, Etc Few works of fiction offer anything so attractive as the records of past ages, and of the events of the present epoch. But while studying and admiring our general national history, our attention is directed to individual history, or biography, upon which the interest of the Whole depends. This book was originally published in 1873 and is a very interesting sketch of historical male figures of the time period. The illustrations are intricate and entertaining. This is a reproduction of an important historical work, scanned and digitized by the University of Toronto, and all the images are original scans of the historical text and illustrations. This publication is an effort to make the book accessible digitally and in print in a new, cleaner edition than has previously been published by enhancing image quality without taking away from the original integrity of the document. Add this wonderful work to your historic library! "A selection of the more well known of the leading 19th century figures featured in Cartoon Portraits and Biographical Sketches of Men of the Day (1873) with drawings by Frederick Watty and accompanied by biographical pieces on each of the subjects. With the exception of one, it is a compilation of all the cartoon portraits that were featured in Once a Week, a magazine originally founded as a result of a dispute between Bradbury and Evans and Charles Dickens. Bradbury and Evans had been Dickens' publisher since 1844, including publishing his magazine Household Words. In 1859, Bradbury and Evans refused to carry an advertisement by Dickens explaining why he had broken with Mrs. Dickens. In consequence, Dickens stopped work on Household Words and founded a new magazine, All The Year Round, which he decided would be editorially independent of any publisher. Bradbury and Evans responded by founding Once A Week, with veteran editor and abolitionist hero Samuel Lucas at the head." (www.publicdomainreview.org)

From the Foreword: Leadership is of surpassing importance of arms. Judgment, competence, and courage often count for more than armed might alone in achieving success. Generalship is carefully studied by soldiers who will lead men in combat, whether or not they aspire to general-officer rank themselves. Over time our comparatively young army has developed an impressive list of senior officers who have ably demonstrated the importance of leadership in trying circumstances. This volume offers a unique glimpse of the commanding generals and chiefs of staff who have lead the United States Army in peace and war. Their rise through the levels of leadership to the pinnacle of their profession reveals both striking parallels and fascinating contrasts. As the author's introductory analysis makes clear, their responsibilities have evolved over more than two hundred and thirty years. Although the essential elements of leadership remain unchanged, the complexity of technology and staff organization has increased radically over time. The format of this volume combines biographical sketches with the officially designated portraits of the commanding generals and chiefs of staff, accompanied by brief accounts on the artists. As an aspect of the art history that has continued for more than three centuries, these official portraits add an interesting and revealing dimension to the biographer's words. This volume not only celebrates the legacy of dedication and patriotism left by these leaders but also enhances our understanding of military leadership at the highest levels. I commend it to the attention of all students of our profession.
