In this book Robert V. Wells presents an exhaustive survey of recently discovered census data covering 21 American colonies between 1623 and 1775. He thus provides the first full-scale determination of basic demographic patterns in all parts of England's empire in America before 1776. Following an examination of the adequacy of the censuses, the author describes the population patterns of each colony for which a census is available. He presents information on size and growth of population; race, age, and sex composition; degree of freedom; household size and composition; marital status; military manpower; and birth and death rates. He concludes by describing important variations in demographic patterns from one part of the empire to another and the possible significance of those differences. Originally published in 1975. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. This is the first full-scale one-volume survey of the demographic history of the United States. From the arrival of humans in the Western Hemisphere to the current century, Klein analyzes the basic demographic trends in the growth of the pre-conquest, colonial and national populations. He surveys the origin and distribution of the Native Americans, the post-conquest free and servile European and African colonial populations and the variation in regional patterns of fertility and mortality to 1800. He then explores trends in births, deaths, international and internal migrations in the nineteenth century and compares them with contemporary European developments. The profound impact of historic declines in disease and mortality on the structure of the late twentieth century population is explained. Finally the late twentieth century changes in family structure, fertility and mortality are evaluated for their influence on the evolution of the national population for the 21st century.

The complete Cambridge History of Latin America presents a large-scale, authoritative survey of Latin America's unique historical experience from the first contacts between the native American Indians and Europeans to the present day. Colonial Spanish America is a selection of chapters from volumes I and II brought together to provide a continuous history of the Spanish Empire in America from the late fifteenth to the early nineteenth centuries. The first three chapters deal with conquest and settlement and relations between Spain and its American Empire; the final six with urban development, mining, rural economy and society, including the formation of the hacienda, the internal economy, and the impact of Spanish rule on Indian societies. Bibliographical essays are included for all chapters. The book will be a valuable text for both students and teachers of Latin American history.
