The brilliant new collection from Vijay Seshadri, author of the Pulitzer Prize–winning 3 Sections No one blends ironic intelligence, emotional frankness, radical self-awareness, and complex humor the way Vijay Seshadri does. In this, his fourth collection, he affirms his place as one of America’s greatest living poets. That Was Now, This Is Then takes on the planar paradoxes of time and space, destabilizing highly tuned lyrics and elegies with dizzying turns in poems of unrequitable longing, of longing for longing, of longing to be found, of grief. In these poems, Seshadri’s speaker becomes the subject, the reader becomes the writer, and the multiplying refracted narratives yield an “anguish so pure it almost / feels like joy.”

Having had a number of careers, Lorenzo (Lawrence) Schechterman says he is not done yet. The singular thing that’s followed him since his teen years has been his zest for writing poems. Among his many other books is the tongue-in-cheek approach he took in his cookbook In the Mood with Food: A Bachelor’s Guide to Wooing Her with Food. The author explains what motivates and inspires him to write poetry: “There have been, and more likely than not, will be moments where my head becomes flooded with a reaction to all that is around me and that which is within me. I just try to give vent to those senses when I come to understand them.” His interests in life have no bounds: from writing professional articles about law, to his poetry and freelance travel writing/photography. A friend once called him “a man for all seasons,” but in typical fashion, he blushed and thought that was an overstatement. Schechterman‘s poems have previously been published in New Dimensions: An Anthology of American Poetry, Idlewild Publishing Co. (1967); The National Library of Poetry publications: Surrounded by Dreams (1998); Touched by Grace (1999); The Harmony of Silence (2000); Forever Spoken (2007); The International Who’s Who in Poetry (2007); Collected Whispers (2008); and The Best Poems and Poets of 2007 (2008). He is a member of The Professional Writers Alliance and The American Writers & Artists, Inc., and has been included in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World.

A darkly humorous new collection of poems by the Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist and author of Wideawake Field and Amity and Prosperity If Men, Then, Eliza Griswold’s second poetry collection, charts a radical spiritual journey through catastrophe. Griswold’s language is forthright and intimate as she steers between the chaos of a tumultuous inner world and an external landscape littered with SUVs, CBD oil, and go bags, talismans of our time. Alternately searing and hopeful, funny and fraught, the poems explore the world’s fracturing through the collapse of the ego, embodied in a character named “I”—a soul attempting to wrestle with itself in the face of an unfolding tragedy.

Accretion, articulation, exploration, transformation, naming, sentiment, private and public property - these are just a few of Juliana Spahr's interests. From her first poem, written in Honolulu, Hawaii, to the last, written in Berkeley, California, about her childhood in Appalachia, Spahr takes us on a wild patchwork journey backwards and forwards in time and space, tracking change - in ecology, society, economies, herself. Through a collage of "found language," a deep curiosity about place, and a restless intelligence, Spahr demonstrates the vibrant possibilities of investigatory poetics"--P. [4] of cover.
