Excerpt from Select Poems of Alfred Lord Tennyson The text of the poems in this volume is that of the last English (1884) edition. For the readings of the editions of 1830, 1832, and 1842, I have had to depend upon quotations in the reviews and in the commentaries of Shepherd, Tainsh, Wace, Bayne, and others. These early editions are not in the Cambridge or Boston libraries, and I have not been able to find them anywhere on this side of the Atlantic. An inquiry for them inserted in the Literary World proved as unavailing as the letters I had sent to friends in various parts of the country and in Canada. I did get track of the 1832 volume in several quarters; but all these "trails," when followed up, led to a single copy belonging to Ralph Waldo Emerson, which has recently disappeared from his library and cannot be traced. He lent it, fifty years ago, to many of his friends - among them, Mr. John S. Dwight, who reviewed it in the Christian Examiner in 1833, and Mrs. Hawthorne (then Miss Peabody), who made a drawing to illustrate The Lady of Shalott. For the changes in the more recent editions, I have depended mainly on the American reprints, all of which, from 1849 down, I have been able to consult. For the readings of the first edition of the Wellington Ode, I used a copy given to the Harvard College Library by Mr. Longfellow. To explain the omission of certain pieces which are specially appropriate for school and home reading, I may add that many favorite poems suited to a younger class of readers than those for whom the present selection is designed, have been reserved for another volume. Excerpt from The Works of Alfred Lord Tennyson, Poet Laureate, Vol. 4 The princess has been edited with elaborate and? Full notes by Prof. Percy M. Wallace (macmillan), espe cially for use in the schools of India 5 and also by William J. Rolfe (houghton, Mifflin Co.) and Henry W. Boyn ton (leach, Shewell 823 Sanborn), especially for American schools. The notes of the three editions are largely, of necessity, the same in substance, but difier in fulness and number A Study of The Princess, by S. E. Dawson (sampson, Low is the original source of much of the better criticism of the poem in these editions, as well as in other books on Tennyson lately published. The biog raphy of Tennyson has not yet appeared, and in lieu of it the best information about his personality is to be found in a few passages of Fitzgerald's and Carlyle's Letters, in Mrs. Anne thackeray-ritchie's Records of Tennyson, Ruskin, Browning, and in Mr. Knowles's reminiscences in the Nineteenth Century Magazine (1892 Two volumes of criticism by Americans, E. C. Stedman's Victorian Poets, and Dr. Henry Van Dyke's Poetry Of Tenny son, deserve mention. A bibliography Oi Tennyson, very complete, by R. H. Shepherd, was recently published. In preparing the present edition, I have referred to most of these volumes, as well as to others dealing more gener ally with Tennyson's genius and work, and special obli gations have been properly accredited in the places where they occur but it gives me pleasure to acknowledge gratefully the assistance I have derived from all of them. Excerpt from Alfred Tennyson In accordance with the plan of this series, I have taken up all the important briefer poems of Tennyson, giving the text itself with interpretive comment, somewhat in the manner of one who should read aloud from the poet to a company gathered by the evening fire, supplying such preliminary information and criticism as might be helpful to the listeners. I have also tried to give some account of the general character and structure of the great works which are too extensive to be represented by giving their full text, - the Idylls, In Memoriam, Maud, and The Princess, - so that any readers who care to use this book in connection with a volume of Tennyson's complete poems may find here a guide for those works. But this does not include the dramas, which form a group of independent interest hardly appropriate to the present purpose. It is a commonplace that Tennyson does not require a guide-book in the same sense as Browning or many another writer. Indeed it would have been somewhat easier to write this book if he had been essentially eccentric, irregular, or obscure: the critic would have had a more agreeable sense of being indispensable. But it does not follow that one may not serve the reader of Tennyson's poetry in a really useful way. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
