Excerpt from Poems of Friendship, Love, and Hope The Author of this book was born about three miles southwest of Delta, Fulton County, Ohio, on February 4th, 1854. He grew up on a farm and was educated in a country school, Wauseon High and Elkhart, Indiana. He began teaching at 18. In the spring of 1877 was admitted to practice law at Goshen, Indiana. He was married on Octo her first, 1880, to Ella Frances Grumman, at Berlin ville, Erie County, Ohio. He has a family of three sons and two daughters. He is now engaged in the law and real estate, together with his son, Kenneth, at Lorain, Ohio, where all communications will reach him; and now, I take up the beginning of the end. In 1876, I was to publish a volume of poems; all I lacked was the means, and I have been fighting in the industrial world ever since. Have I won? Well, yes! And now I am going to the press. After taking up and dropping a name at each decade, I will call it Poems of F rienship, Love and Hope for what else of this earth interests me? Let me be a monarch of Love and thou mayest rule all else. My object is to build up and better Humanity. I go before the Public of my own free will and accord, whether for praise or condemnation, you will find me still writing. I come at eventide but salute you by saying, Good morning, here I am. N ow I really hope you will be pleased for Where do I get my cost if I fail to get praise? All else I was forced to get before I went to press. From my earliest mem ory, I liked things sweet and would I be an Author if I did not like praise? I always wanted my butter spread thickly and Whether condemnation or praise, do not be afraid to spread it on and I will greet bothwith a smile. Mr. Critic, wade in, I love a fracas; if you will fight, we will postpone dinner and put on the gloves; but for all who praise, God be with you. Excerpt from Poems of Friendship, Life, Home, Love, Religion, Humor and Other Poems The Lake Sequoia In a setting of pines and cedars, The lake Sequoia lies; And in its depths reflected, Shine forth the azure skies. Wrapped in this beauteous setting, Who could, unmoved, behold The rare and splendid beauty, By poets pen untold. And when the night advances, And the moon above the pines Shines forth upon the water, The setting then combines To entrance and holds the looker Who Nature's works admire; They can gaze and gaze in wonder, Gathered 'round the old camp fire. The beauties of stream and forest; The falls, Sequoia, near; All tell of a splendid Sculptor, A Sculptor without peer. The mountains are the handiwork, As also the setting grand; But lake Sequoia cannot claim This Sculptor's mighty hand. Excerpt from Friendship and Other Poems Verdant and boundless, sunk in ease we lie While golden suns drive through a cloudless Sky, A blinded Samson, sprawling, helpless, shorn. As nations whom the wolves of war have torn. Dreaming, we hear vast armies march and wheel Or like two endless Pythons Clad in steel, Writhing and roaring with the maddening pain League after league lie deadlocked on the plain. Excerpt from The Gift of Friendship, and Other Verses HE greatest blessing that one can give another as he travels through life is the gift of friend ship to those whom he has learned to love. To have given others the assur ance and proof of one's friendship is to have lived profitably. To have received from others the pledge and evidence of their love is to have lived richly. And the man who has both given and received this blessing is rich indeed. These occasional verses have been written during a period of nearly twenty years to say frankly to a few friends a little of what their friendship has meant to me. If they have carried my message of gratitude to the hearts of those for whom they were written, they have fulfilled their first mission. If in this collected form they serve as mes sage bearers for others, I shall be glad to have shared them. Excerpt from Friendship: A Poem Is rigorously barred with gold, And opens but to golden keys. The world a solar system seems Each orb has its own destined path And midst them all Mammon blazes with golden beams, From him its light each planet hath. And friendship has its limited range, And must in that its orbit trace Nor, comet-like, Its own appointed sphere can change, And wander into trackless space. A home of passions is man's breast And self is first and what is his Of passions strong; Nor are the strongest e'er the best, Nor oft appears he as he is.
