Since the publication of the best-selling first edition, much has been discovered about Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the single-celled fungus commonly known as baker's yeast or brewer's yeast that is the basis for much of our understanding of the molecular and cellular biology of eukaryotes. This wealth of new research data demands our attention and r

This book began life as a review article. That article spawned a symposium which was, in turn, greatly expanded to form the present volume. As the project moved through these developmental stages (hopefully, towards attainment of its full maturity), a number of people have provided invaluable assistance to us, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank them. Gordon Orians must certainly take a high place in that list. He has been both a friend and mentor to W.E.K., and many of the topics explored in this book have emerged from the resultant dialogue. His thought processes, ideas and perhaps even some of his turns of phrase emerge throughout much ofthe book. Gordon also played a pivotal role in inviting in motion, and so he has served as a catalyst the article that set this project to the book as well as one of its reagents. While he has not served as an editor of this book, he is one of its authors in more than just the literal sense.

Provides an up-to-date introduction to the subject of ore microscopy, emphasizing the basic skills required for the study of opaque minerals in polished sections. Describes the modern ore microscope, the preparation of polished and polished-thin sections of opaque minerals and ores, and the identification of these minerals using both qualitative techniques and the quantitative methods of reflectance and microhardness measurement. Later sections discuss the interpretation of textural intergrowths of ore minerals and the determination of their paragenesis, along with the examination of coexisting minerals for determining their physio-chemical conditions of formation. Appendices contain the data necessary to identify approximately 100 of the more common ore minerals and those frequently encountered by the professional scientist.

The evolution of mechanical properties and its characterization is important to the weld quality whose further analysis requires mechanical property and microstructure correlation. Present book addresses the basic understanding of the Friction Stir Welding (FSW) process that includes effect of various process parameters on the quality of welded joints. It discusses about various problems related to the welding of dissimilar aluminium alloys including influence of FSW process parameters on the microstructure and mechanical properties of such alloys. As a case study, effect of important process parameters on joint quality of dissimilar aluminium alloys is included.

Friction stir welding is a relatively new joining process developed initially for aluminum alloys. It is a solid-state joining technique that is energy efficient, environment friendly, and versatile. This book covers the rapidly growing area of friction stir welding. It also addresses the use of the technology for other types of materials processing, including superplastic forming, casting modification, and surface treatments. The book has been prepared to serve as the first general reference on friction stir technology. Information is provided on tools, machines, process modeling, material flow, microstructural development and properties. Materials addressed include aluminum alloys, titanium alloys, steels, nickel base alloys, and copper alloys. The chapters have been written by the leading experts in this field, representing leading industrial companies and university and government research institutions.
