The second edition of this work, one in a three-volume set, continues the compilation of information originally brought together by T.C. Patton. It represents the expertise from worldwide authorities in the pigment industry, giving readers access to such topics as the physical and chemical meaning of color, the worldwide market for pigments, and the properties and major reasons for use of each of the pigments covered in the text. In addition to the updated and new data in this edition are new chapters on novel organic and inorganic pigments that were not even at the research stage when the 1973 version was published. Most chapters include a new section concerning the effect of the pigment under discussion on human health and on the environment. In light of new legislative standards, these discussions have special significance. This work is complemented by the still-current volumes, Applications and Markets (Volume 2) and Characterization and Physical Relationships (Volume 3).

This volume is the ideal companion to Wiley's trilogy: The Pigments Handbook (1988), Industrial Organic Pigments (1997), and Industrial Inorganic Pigments (1998). High Performance Pigments have become increasingly important in recent years, with a growth rate well in advance of the more classical types of pigments. The book offers both producers and users of High Performance Pigments the opportunity to review and update their understanding of latest technologies and market issues impacting both inorganic and organic High Performance Pigments, together with assessing key regulatory affairs, in this specialty niche of the chemical industry. The manufacture of High Performance Pigments is today a global industry. This is reflected in the multinational expertise of the over twenty experts, drawn from Europe, North America and Asia, who have authored chapters in this book. No professional today can afford to waste time on unfocussed research. This book will effectively help chemists, physicists, engineers, applications and regulatory specialists, and materials scientists to stay ahead in this fast-changing field.

The use of paints, varnishes and enamels for decoration is nearly as old as human culture itself. These are widely used in homes as well as in industry because painted surfaces are attractive and easy to keep clean. Paint is generally made up of a pigment. It is a chemical material, which alters the color of reflected or transmitted light due to wavelength-selective absorption. Varnish is a transparent, hard, protective finish or film primarily used in wood finishing but also for other materials. Varnish is traditionally a combination of a drying oil, a resin, and a thinner or solvent. The technology of paints, varnishes and enamels is changing rapidly and becoming more complex each day. The paint industry is an important segment of the chemical industry. Enamel paint is paint that air dries to a hard, usually glossy, finish, used for coating surfaces that are outdoors or otherwise subject to wear or variations in temperature. The Indian paint industry has seen a gradual shift in the preferences of people from the traditional whitewash to higher quality paints like emulsions and enamel paints with improvement in lifestyle. India is the second largest consumer of paint in Asia. Over the past few years, the Indian paint market has substantially grown and caught the attention of many major players. The market for paints in India is expected to grow at 1.5 times to 2 times GDP growth rate in the coming years. In terms of volumes, pigments demand is expected to reach 4.4 million tonnes. Due to increased Government funding for infrastructure, demand for paints both in industrial and decorative segment is set to rise, thereby rendering Indian paint industry to be poised for further growth. This handbook is designed for use by everyone engaged in the paints, pigments, varnishes and enamels industry. It provides all the information of the various formulae and processes of paints, pigments, varnishes and enamels. The major content of the book are paint testing, color in paint, maintenance paints, emulsion paints, exterior or interior paints, exterior or interior multicolor paints, exterior swimming pool paints and enamels, interior ceiling paints, metal paints, marine paints, enamel paints, interior fire- retardant paints, interior gloss paints, paint formulation, manufacture of natural copal varnishes, floor paints and enamels, varnishes, lacquers and floor finishes, white pigments, colored pigments, pigment dispersion etc. The book contains addresses of plant & machinery suppliers with their Photographs. It will be a standard reference book for professionals, entrepreneurs, those studying and researching in this important area and others interested in the field of paints, pigments, varnishes and enamels technology. Pigments act as tracers to elucidate the fate of phytoplankton in the world's oceans and are often associated with important biogeochemical cycles related to carbon dynamics in the oceans. They are increasingly used in in situ and remote-sensing applications, detecting algal biomass and major taxa through changes in water colour. This book is a follow-up to the 1997 volume Phytoplankton Pigments in Oceanography (UNESCO Press). Since then, there have been many advances concerning phytoplankton pigments. This book includes recent discoveries on several new algal classes particularly for the picoplankton, and on new pigments. It also includes many advances in methodologies, including liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and developments and updates on the mathematical methods used to exploit pigment information and extract the composition of phytoplankton communities. The book is invaluable primarily as a reference for students, researchers and professionals in aquatic science, biogeochemistry and remote sensing.

The purpose of this unique handbook is to provide reference material that includes basic principles and current developments in the field of natural coloration and finishing. A sustainable world requires the utilization of renewable materials or resources that can be produced in huge quantities for a wide range of applications. To adopt the use of active materials for textile coloration and finishing, they should reach the technical demands of the modern world such as eco-preservation, economic and ecological requirements by which, equity and sustainability might be considered. Therefore, there is a need to discuss and understand the challenges and solutions of textile coloration and functional finishing methodologies. The 20 chapters comprising the Handbook of Renewable Materials for Coloration and Finishing are divided into four segments: Substrates for Coloration and Finishing; Renewable Colorants and their Applications; Advanced Materials and Technologies for Coloration; and Finishing and Sustainability. Part I contains three chapters that overview the systematic discussion on the suitability, physical, chemical and processing aspects of substrates for coloration and finishing. Part II includes nine chapters and covers in-depth arguments on renewable colorants and their various applications including a chapter on bio-colorant's application as photosensitizers for dye sensitized solar cells. Part III contains five chapters in which modern advancements and processing methods/technologies for coloration and functional finishing are presented comprehensively. Part IV contains two chapters that provide sustainable aspects of coloration and finishing.
