Given their tendency to splinter over tactics and goals, social movements are rarely unified. Following the modern Western animal rights movement over thirty years, Corey Lee Wrennapplies the sociological theory of Bourdieu, Goffman, Weber, and contemporary social movement researchers to examine structural conditions in the animal rights movement, facilitating factionalism in today’s era of professionalized advocacy. Modern social movements are dominated by bureaucratically oriented nonprofits, a special arrangement that creates tension between activists and movement elites who compete for success in a corporate political arena. Piecemeal Protest examines the impact of nonprofitization on factionalism and a movement’s ability to mobilize, resonate, and succeed. Wrenn’sexhaustive analysis of archival movement literature and exclusive interviews with movement leaders illustrate how entities with greater symbolic capital are positioned to monopolize claims-making, disempower competitors, and replicate hegemonic power, eroding democratic access to dialogue and decision-making essential for movement health. Piecemeal Protest examines social movement behavior shaped by capitalist ideologies and state interests. As power concentrates to the disadvantage of marginalized factions in the modern social movement arena, Piecemeal Protest shines light on processes of factionalism and considers how, in the age of nonprofits, intra-movement inequality could stifle social progress.

Alternative strategies of economic development have received little attention in the literature. Academics rarely compare certain strategic features or assess the performance of different strategies in terms of outcomes. This book seeks to address that gap and to provide a theoretical background to the shift from industry to human capital-intensive services as the engine of economic growth. Pioneering studies reveal interesting trends and patterns that point to the growing importance of intangible capital for the level of GDP. They also indicate a much greater role of economic freedom in bringing about this second great structural change than was the case with industrialization. With this perspective on structural change and the role of freedom, Shortcut or Piecemeal also provides an extensive assessment of four key developing countries: Brazil, Russia, India, and China. Subjects: 1. Central planning—History. 2. Economic development—History

Given Turkey's already extensive trade liberalization, a move to uniform external incentives would bring most of the benefits of full trade liberalization. Moreover, it is not enough to have piecemeal reform of tariffs or export susidies alone. Harmonizing Turkey's already low tariffs to the European Community's tariff structure will improve Turkey's welfare only if Turkey at the same time removes or reduces its export subsidies.

The 1924 Filipino sugar strike came as a shocking blow to Hawaii's self-image. The tragic deaths at Hanapepe were regarded as an anomaly in Hawaii's peaceful, idyllic image. Yet as Reinecke's research clearly indicates, the sugar industry was building to a climax in the 1920s. In the traditional sense, the strike was a "piecemeal" affair, lacking clear goals and having virtually no leadership or plans. These young, largely illiterate, Filipinos wrought massive changes into a more modern, industrial mode; into what was widely known thereafter as the Big Five. Evidence from the University of Hawaii's new archive collection, the H.S.P.A. Plantation Archives, not available to Dr. Reinecke completes the picture of the strike with evidence of the massive changes in management, recruitment and labor policies. The strike remains as he described it in his title: "The Piecemeal Strike." The new evidence rounds out the transformation of the industry.

A new meals-in-minutes cookbook from recipe developer, photographer, and blogger Kathryn Pauline! Based on the idea that one go-to component can anchor several meals, Piecemeal is designed to help a busy home cook prepare delicious meals simply, in 15, 30, or 45 minutes. This strategy-based cookbook features recipes for 30 transformational components—such as grilled corn, turkey meatballs, tzatziki, roasted grapes—each used in three different ways, for a total of 120 delicious and adaptable recipes. The featured components were selected for maximum performance: each is flavorful, storable, and versatile and can stand alone or be used in multiple ways. Piecemeal presents a way for cooks to create a flexible repertoire of meals without doing a ton of work at one time. Prepare the component when you have some time, then use it to enhance or center meals throughout the week, even on your most hectic evenings. The three recipes that pair with each component are fully prepared, from start to finish, in either 15 minutes or less, 30 minutes or less, or up to 1 hour (a project recipe with a bit more prep). For example: Make caramelized tomatoes. Use them in Caramelized Caprese (a 5+ minute recipe), Summer Strata (a 15+ minute recipe), or a Cornmeal Pancake Stack (a 30+ minute recipe). With Pauline's gorgeous photographs accompanying each of its smart, strategic, and delicious recipes, Piecemeal is, at its core, a master course in culinary riffing. ULTRA-ADAPTABLE WEEKNIGHT COOKING: Here are flexible recipes to provide flavor and ease to weeknight meals, and teach a home cook how to riff, build flavor, and cook creatively. With 30 component recipes to mold into whatever you're craving that day and have on hand, Piecemeal proves that good food can be produced quickly and efficiently even on the nights you're working late. GREAT VALUE: With 120 go-to recipes and 100 vibrant photographs, plus instructions and formulas that enable readers to experiment and customize their menu to complement what's in their fridge, this cookbook is a weeknight workhorse that will provide year-round inspiration. COOKING AT HOME MADE EASY: These are the kinds of recipes that people actually cook on a regular basis—easy weekday staples such as salads, tacos, jazzy pasta dishes—but with deep flavors and creative flavor combinations. Taking an accessible approach to weeknight cooking, Piecemeal will appeal to home cooks of all ages and skill-levels who are looking for unexpected, tasty weeknight recipes. In a series of conversational essays, this textbook discusses the manner in which economic thought addresses a broad array of everyday issues beyond classical textbook treatments. In the spirit of popular economics books, the author uncovers economic issues and solutions from individuals, businesses, society, and the country as a whole in a decidedly non-technical and relatable manner. Should the federal government mandate use of child safety seats on commercial airlines? Can genetic information substitute for a college degree? The contents of this book touch on many of these contemporary topics in an accessible way. Addressing undergraduate and graduate students, as well as scholars in different fields of economics, this book is a must-read for everybody interested in a better understanding of economic thought.
