Excerpt from Physical Education by Muscular Exercise The material in this little book grew up gradually through the exigencies of a lecture course on the Philosophy of Exercise. The subject-matter appeared in the "Y. M. C. A. Athletic League Letter" in 1899-1900. The range of topics discussed indicates my indebtedness to many persons. My first impulses toward working out my own thought on the subject came from my instructor, Dr. Dudley Allen Sargent, of Harvard University. The direction of my study was largely influenced for years by Dr. E. M. Hartwell, then of Johns Hopkins. To the inspiration of President G. Stanley Hall I owe the biologic point of view. To Dr. Wm. T. Harris I owe my first thought in regard to the relation of exercise to the vegetative processes. To Dr. T. M. Balliet, Superintendent of Schools, I also owe much. I do not wish to saddle these gentlemen with the responsibility for these ideas, for many of them are my own. If I have succeeded in my endeavor this book will be of service to those who wish a general view of the subject, whether for use in medicine or education. Excerpt from Strength and How to Obtain It Hundreds of letters reach me daily, asking Can I become strong? Yes; you can all become strong if you have the will and use it in the right direction. But, in the first place, you must learn to exercise your mind. This first of all lessons in physical training is of the utmost importance. For on it the whole of my system depends. If physical exercise alone and unaided could achieve the desired end, then would every one who, like the breaker of stones, has to use his muscles to earn his daily bread, become, in a popular acceptation of the term, a strong 1 man. The breaker of stones, however, never usemhis' mind. He has to get through a given amount of work, and his method is purely mechanical. Though he may use his muscles in hard work every day of the year it is unlikely that his strength will ever materially increase. Excerpt from Exercise in Education and Medicine The recognition of physical education by teachers has been retarded by dabblers and self-elected professors of one or other systems, whose extravagant claims have done much to obscure the real educational value of neuromuscular training; for the result of physiologic research in the growth and development of the nervous system is just beginning to be applied in the classification and design of exercise, to harmonize it with the conclusions of proved science. Exercise has so many points of contact with education. It is so intricately related to mental, moral, and social training, each of which alone is so partial and incomplete, that the progressive educationalist is now compelled to study its bearing on all three. Excerpt from The Body Builder, Robert J. Roberts, Being a Collection of Drills and Health Hints, and Appreciations, of the Man Who Blazed the Trail, for Physical Education in the Young Men's Christian Association The best thing ever said about exercise was said by Robert J. Roberts: All exercises must be safe, short, easy, beneficial, and pleasing. I am happy to write this introduction, for in so doing I can pay my proper tribute to him and at the same time can extend his idea. Roberts' platform-just ten words all exercises must be safe, short, easy, beneficial, and pleasing, grew out of his long teaching and great common sense in observation of men and the effects of different exercises upon them. He had taught so-called fancy gymnastics; he was thoroughly familiar with the heavy work of the weight lifters; he took into account not only the immediate effect of exercises, but, by means of watching men for a series Of years, he formed im portant conclusions with reference to the ultimate effects of exercises. Let us examine his platform. All exercises must be safe. Approximately one man out of ten is qualified by nature to take up the more difficult forms of gymnastics - those forms which by common repute are not safe. Roberts maintains that his work is for the masses; that he is not endeavoring to build up a system for the favored few - he wants everybody. He wants to be able to handle people in large numbers and quickly. This can be done only where the exercises are safe.
