Following the first Capri School on Photon Correlation Spectroscopy held in July 1973 and published earlier in this series (Series B: Physics v.3) a second Capri NATO Advanced Study Institute on this topic was held at the Hotei Luna from 26 July to 6 August 1976. This volume contains the invited lecture courses and seminars and some of the contributed seminars presented at this Institute. Much had happened in the field in the intervening three years and it was the intention of the Organising Committee to build on the previous courses • without detailed repetition of fundamentals. and to extend the coverage widely over the use of photon-correla tion methods for the temporal or spectral analysis of fluctuating light sources. In particular, the rapid expansion of these methods for the measurement of macroscopic motion by Laser Doppler Veloci metry was given special emphasis as is indicated in the title. Surface physics and chemistry have in recent years become one of the most active fields in solid state research. A number of techniques have been developed, and both the experimental aspect and the correlated theory are evolving at an extremely fast rate. Electron and ion spectroscopy are of major importance in this development. In this volume, which contains edited and extended versions of eight sets of lectures given at the NATO Advanced Study Institute held at Ghent, Belgium, from August 29 to September 9, 1977, a re view of the state of the art in these fields is given from both an experimental and a theoretical point of view. Electron emission techniques such as UPS (ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy), XPS (x-ray photoemission spectroscopy), and AES (Auger electron spectroscopy) constitute the major part of this volume, reflecting the fact that they continue to be the most widely applied surface techniques. Recent developments in the application of synchrotron radiation to angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy are extensively covered, from an experimental point of view by Prof. W. E. Spicer (Stanford University, U.S.A.) and from a theoretical point of view by Dr. A. Liebsch (Kernforschungsanlage Julich, Germany). Emphasis is put on the study of energy bands in layered structures, and on chemisorption on well-defined surfaces. Chemisorption and catalysis on metals is treated in detail by Prof. G. Ertl (Universitat Munchen, Germany). This chapter contains a review of the application of the different surface techniques to specific surface systems.

This NATO Advanced Study Institute was the fourth in a series devoted to the subject of phase transitions and instabilities with particular attention to structural phase transforma~ions. Beginning wi th the first Geilo institute in 19'(1 we have seen the emphasis evolve from the simple quasiharmonic soft mode description within the Landau theory, through the unexpected spectral structure re presented by the "central peak" (1973), to such subjects as melting, turbulence and hydrodynamic instabilities (1975). Sophisticated theoretical techniques such as scaling laws and renormalization group theory developed over the same period have brought to this wide range of subjects a pleasing unity. These institutes have been instrumental in placing structural transformations clearly in the mainstream of statistical physics and critical phenomena. The present Geilo institute retains some of the counter cul tural flavour of the first one by insisting whenever possible upon peeking under the skirts of even the most successful phenomenology to catch a glimpse of the underlying microscopic processes. Of course the soft mode remains a useful concept, but the major em phasis of this institute is the microscopic cause of the mode softening. The discussions given here illustrate that for certain important classes of solids the cause lies in the electron phonon interaction. Three major types of structural transitions are considered. In the case of metals and semimetals, the electron phonon interaction relie6 heavily on the topology of the Fermi surface.

Volumes 30 and 31 of this series, dealing with "~1any Degrees of Freedom," contain the proceedings of the 1976 International Summer Institute of Theoretical Physics, held at the University of Bielefeld from August 23 to September 4, 1976. This Institute was the eighth in a series of summer schools devoted to particle physics and organized by universities and research institutes in the Federal Republic of Germany. Many degrees of freedom and collective phenomena playa critical role in the description and understanding of elementary particles. The lectures in this volume were intended to show how a combination of theoretical prejudices and experimental results can lead to the crys tallization of models and theories. Topics ranged from quark, parton, and bag model~ to du~l unitarization, from cluster pictures to hadron-nucleus collisions and to astrophysical implications. The Institute took place at the Center for Inter disciplinary Research of the University of Bielefeld. The 1976 Cargese Summer Institute was devoted to the study of certain exciting developments in quantum field theory and critical phenomena. Its genesis occurred in 1974 as an outgrowth of many scientific discussions amongst the undersigned, who decided to form a scientific committee for the organization of the school. On the one hand, various workers in quantum field theory were continuing to make startling progress in different directions. On the other hand, many new problems were arising from these various domains. Thus we feIt that 1976 might be an appropriate occasion both to review recent developments and to encourage interactions between researchers from different backgrounds working on a common set of unsolved problems. An important aspect of the school, as it took place, was the participation of and stimulating interaction between such a broad spectrum of theorists. The central topics of the school were chosen from the areas of solitons, phase transitions, critical behavior, the renormalization group, gauge fields and the analysis of nonrenormalizable field theories. A noteworthy feature of these topics is the interpene tration of ideas from quantum field theory and statistical mechanics whose inherent unity is seen in the functional integral formulation of quantum field theory. The actual lectures were partly in the form of tutorials designed to familiarize the participants with re cent progress on the main topics of the school. Others were in the form of more specialized seminars reporting on recent research.

Photon correlation is a kind of spectroscopy designed to identify optical frequency shifts and line-broadening effects in the range of many MHz down to a few Hz. The optical intensity is measured in terms of single photon detection events which result in current pulses at the output of photomulti plier tubes. This signal is processed in real time in a special-purpose paral lel processor known as a correlator. The resulting photon correlation func tion, a function in the time domain, contains the desired spectral informa tion, which may be extracted by a suitable algorithm. Due to the non-intrusive nature and the sound theoretical basis of photon correlation, the phenomena under study are not disturbed, and the parameters in question can be precisely evaluated. For these reasons photon correlation has become a valuable and in many instances indispensable technique in two distinct fields. One of these is velocimetry in fluid flow. This includes hydro- and aerodynamic processes in liquids, gases, or flames where the velo city field may be stationary, time periodic, or turbulent, and may range from micrometers per second for motion inside biological cells to one kilometer per second for supersonic flow. The other major field is stochastic particle propagation due to Brownian motion.

Several previous Advanced Study Institutes have concentrated on the techniques of light scattering, while the biological appli cations were not fully explored. Many of the techniques are now standardised and are being applied to a wide range of biologically significant problems both in vivo and in vitro. While laser light scattering methods are superior to conventional methods, there was a general reluctance among biologists to adopt them because of the complexity of the physical techniques and the accompanying mathe matical analysis. Consequently valuable opportunities for advancing the understanding of the biological problems were being missed. Advances in the design and commercial availability of standard light scattering instruments, and the availability of standard computer programs, made the more widespread use of these techniques a practical reality for the biologist. While biologists are unable to cope with the complexities of the physical techniques, physicists are generally unaware of the nature and scale of the biological problems. The meeting at Maratea was an attempt to bring these two groups together and provide an impetus for the application of laser light scattering techniques to biology. This volume differs from the three previous proceedings on laser light scattering in the NATO ASI series (B3, B23, B73), in that it has been published in the Life Sciences series rather than the Physics series, reflecting the shift in emphasis from the development of a new technique to its application in biology.
