Come visit the birthplace of American freedom: from the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall to Rittenhouse Square and Old Fort Mifflin, and from the elegant mansions of the Main Line to historic Bucks County with its artists’ colonies and nature preserves. The City of Brotherly Love has so much to offer, and it’s all proudly displayed in Elan Penn’s striking images: the houses of worship and battle sites from the Revolutionary period; the 19th Century landmarks, including City Hall, the Merchant’s Exchange, and the Philadelphia Zoo; Greater Philadelphia today, in all its glorious diversity; and select Cultural Treasures. Featured are museums of arts and sciences, centers of learning, public plazas and statues, state parks and naval shipyards. Anchoring the photos is illuminating historical commentary.

Mary Ann Shadd Cary was a courageous and outspoken nineteenth-century African American who used the press and public speaking to fight slavery and oppression in the United States and Canada. Part of the small free black elite who used their education and limited freedoms to fight for the end of slavery and racial oppression, Shadd Cary is best known as the first African American woman to publish and edit a newspaper in North America. But her importance does not stop there. She was an active participant in many of the social and political movements that influenced nineteenth century abolition, black emigration and nationalism, women's rights, and temperance. Mary Ann Shadd Cary: The Black Press and Protest in the Nineteenth Century explores her remarkable life and offers a window on the free black experience, emergent black nationalisms, African American gender ideologies, and the formation of a black public sphere. This new edition contains a new epilogue and new photographs.

Philadelphia Celebrates: Three Great Anniversaries 1876, 1926, 1976. A remarkable account of the Centennial, Sesquicentennial, and Bicentennial celebrations of the American Declaration of Independence, Philadelphia Celebrates lays bare the motivations behind the planning and execution of these celebrations. Far more than just a history, this book is, above all, a portrait of the people who made these celebrations possible: the rebels, the crooks, the advocates, and the citizens forgotten in the shadow of politicians' egos.

Meet some of Philadelphia's fiercest black women leaders. They range from the first black woman known to be born in Philadelphia (1694)--who ran a ferry business during colonial times--to the woman whose childhood experiences led her to become a surgeon and medical advisor to celebrities. All of the women "bring it" as activists-- in community and movement work, business and civic institutions, education, churches, medicine, government, journalism, sports and the arts. The authors document that many of them worked together directly. Others drew inspiration from those who came before. Their power came not just from what they did as individuals, but from how their efforts snowballed into a Philadelphia community of women that spanned geographies, sectors and time. The authors' experiences as activists, researchers and educators--and their own circumstances of frequently being "the only black women in the room"--fill the book not just with facts, but with genuine empathy. These are the inspiring stories of black women in one of the country's most important cities, who let no obstacle deter them from changing the game.--

The history of Philadelphia television is the history of television in America. Philo Farnsworth, credited with inventing television, performed some of his earliest experiments at the Franklin Institute and at 1230 Mermaid Lane. Those experiments led to the city's first television station, W3XE. Channel 3 was also the first local station in the country to broadcast in color. WCAU-TV Channel 10 constructed the first building in the world designed specifically as a television station. WFIL created one of the most iconic shows in television history, American Bandstand, as well as Action News, which has helped Channel 6 stay on top of the ratings for most of the last 40 years. Dick Clark, Ed McMahon, Ernie Kovacs, Tom Snyder, David Brenner, Maury Povich, Kelly Ripa, Brian Williams, and others are among those who have worked in Philadelphia television throughout its history.

How does a so-called bad neighborhood go about changing its reputation? Is it simply a matter of improving material conditions or picking the savviest marketing strategy? What kind of role can or should the arts play in that process? Does gentrification always entail a betrayal of a neighborhood’s roots? Tackling these questions and offering a fresh take on the dynamics of urban revitalization, The Philadelphia Barrio examines one neighborhood’s fight to erase the stigma of devastation. Frederick F. Wherry shows how, in the predominantly Latino neighborhood of Centro de Oro, entrepreneurs and community leaders forged connections between local businesses and cultural institutions to rebrand a place once nicknamed the Badlands. Artists and performers negotiated with government organizations and national foundations, Wherry reveals, and took to local galleries, stages, storefronts, and street parades in a concerted, canny effort to reanimate the spirit of their neighborhood. Complicating our notions of neighborhood change by exploring the ways the process is driven by local residents, The Philadelphia Barrio presents a nuanced look at how city dwellers can make commercial interests serve the local culture, rather than exploit it.
