"This fascinating book presents a wide-ranging collection of interdisciplinary research on Gujarati identities in India and the diaspora. An international group of women researchers from different academic backgrounds has gathered a rich set of data that provide fresh insights and raise many searching questions. We find here theoretical and practical perspectives linked to social, cultural, historical, literary and personal concerns that will appeal to and challenge a wide readership. A most remarkable volume on which the editors are to be congratulated." Professor Ursula King FRSA University of Bristol "In this welcome volume, women scholars draw out the many facets of identity as it is forged in the minds and bodies, and social, spiritual and business worlds of Gujaratis in India and the diaspora. It is rare indeed to find a book which discusses in such detail the impact of gender and ethnicity on the research process as well as on the lives of those studied." Many countries have implemented policies to increase the number and quality of scientific researchers as a means to foster innovation and spur economic development and progress. To that end, grounded in a view of women as a rich, yet underutilized knowledge and labor resource, a great deal of recent attention has focused on encouraging women to pursue education and careers in science — even in countries with longstanding dominant patriarchal regimes. Yet, overall, science remains an area in which girls and women are persistently disadvantaged. This book addresses that situation. It bridges the gap between individual- and societal-level perspectives on women in science in a search for systematic solutions to the challenge of building an inclusive and productive scientific workforce capable of creating the innovation needed for economic growth and societal wellbeing. This book examines both the role of gender as an organizing principle of social life and the relative position of women scientists within national and international labor markets. Weaving together and engaging research on globalization, the social organization of science, and gendered societal relations as key social forces, this book addresses critical issues affecting women’s contributions and participation in science. Also, while considering women’s representation in science as a whole, examinations of women in the chemical sciences, computing, mathematics and statistics are offered as examples to provide insights into how differing disciplinary cultures, functional tasks and socio-historical conditions can affect the advancement of women in science relative to important variations in educational and occupational realities. Edited by three social scientists recognized for their expertise in science and technology policy, education, workforce participation, and stratification, this book includes contributions from an intellectually diverse group of international scholars and analysts and features compelling cases and initiatives from around the world, with implications for research, industry practice, education and policy development.

This volume examines major issues facing successful women in academic science. In doing so, Sue Rosser outlines the persisting and shifting perspectives of women who have achieved seniority and remained in academia during the last fifteen years through survey data from women who received POWRE awards from the NSF. Some evidence suggests that budget cuts and an increasing reliance on technology have impacted higher education and exacerbated gender issues, but until now, little research has focused directly on the lingering effects of these changes.

Address key issues of the gender-media relation, from an analysis of news media’s coverage of women politicians, to the marketing of ‘girl power’, to strategizing for equality in newsrooms. Which factors prevent a larger female participation in the scientific and research careers? This book analyzes recent data and figures about women researchers in R&D and Higher Education institutions, their motivations, the reasons and causes determining the still persisting gender gap. The various scholars suggest possible strategies for obtaining a better gender balance in the scientific systems, and highlight policy measures for institutions to ease the participation of women in science, research and technology studies and careers. The final aim is to contribute to change the scientific gender bias paradigm into cooperation between genders in science and to involve in reflection and subsequent actions not only women but the scientific community at large, institutions, national and European political bodies concerned in research and science policy. Sveva Avveduto, is research director at the Institute for Research on Population and Social Policies of the Italian National Research Council. Her main research interests concern science and education policy, and science and society issues. She is the leader of CNR-IRPPS research activities in SMART, RESPECT and EVIDENCE Projects financed by the European Commission. Lucio Pisacane, sociologist, is researcher at the Institute for Research on Population and Social Policies of the Italian National Research Council. From 2007 he has been working for CNR focusing on social policy research programmes and on studies on higher education.
