Transitioning from secondary to higher education is not a natural step for many first-year students in higher education institutions. There is a considerable difference between being a student at school and university, and previous research has highlighted the difficulties faced by first-year university students during their transition phase. Higher education institutions and their departments acknowledge the challenges faced by new students, and they differ in their approach to coping with the issue; each seeks to find the most effective solution for its students. To reduce the withdrawal rate during the first year of college, higher education providers are expected to apply transition programs to help students transition. The Handbook of Research on Coping Mechanisms for First-Year Students Transitioning to Higher Education presents a comprehensive account of the dynamics in higher education institutions and culture shock for new students and analyzes models and theories of adjustment of new students in higher education institutions. Covering key topics such as gender, institutional support, and success factors, this reference work is ideal for administrators, higher education professionals, researchers, scholars, academicians, practitioners, instructors, and students.

Background of the Study Adjustment of an individual is determined by the individual's effort to survive in his or her environment. It is a process of maintaining harmonious relationship with the environment. During the process of adjustment, an individual faces many environmental challenges and conflicts. The adjustment of a person is influenced by the environmental factors and personality of the person. A person's individual determinants affect the individual's ability to adjust and deal with the problems. Each person consciously or unconsciously tries to satisfy his own diverse and sometimes conflicting demands in the environment where he lives (Abbasian, et al., 2013). If a person is unable to communicate with others or with his own social environment, flow of adjustment is disturbed and maladaptive behaviors or behavioral disorders might occur (Abbasian, et al., 2013). The ability to deal with the environmental challenges and conflicts, according to the demands of the situation is the proper adjustment of a person to that situation. Adjustment is a process adopted by an individual to fulfill the demands and requirements of his or her life through the application of proper adaptation strategies. The fresher students have to go through different challenges at the phase of their adjustment in the beginning stage when they join an Educational Institution. At the initial stages, fresher students are unable to adjust with the new setting of Educational Institution. Margolis (1981) pointed that separation from family, home, friends and neighborhood to attend a University, might have a lasting effect on an individual's future development. The National Centre for Educational Statistics reported that approximately one third of entering College students leave higher education without obtaining a degree and most do so during their first year (Bradburn and Carroll, 2002). The researchers (Mudhovozi, 2012; Kavdiya and Saharan, 2012) have identified different psychological and social factors related to the adjustment problem of the Fresher students in College and University campuses. Salami (2011) examined the effect of psychological and social factors on first year students' College adjustment. The study found that different psychological and social factors influence the adjustment of the first-year College students. Quasy (2010) examined the effect of gender and place of residence, on fresher students' adjustment in University campus. The findings of the study reported that the fresher female University students faced more adjustment difficulties compared to the male fresher University students. No differences found in adjustment of the students related to their place of residence,
