How might performance serve as a means for facing ubiquitous trauma and pain, in humans and ecologies? While reflecting on her multidisciplinary work Systems of Pain/Networks of Resilience, artist Meghan Moe Beitiks considers bodies of knowledge in Trauma Theory, Intersectional Feminist Philosophy, Ecology, Disability Studies, New Materialism, Object-Oriented Ontology, Gender Studies, Artistic Research, Psychology, Performance Studies, Social Justice, Performance Philosophy, Performance Art, and a series of first-person interviews in an attempt to answer that question. Beitiks brings us through the first-person process of making the work and the real-life, embodied encounters with the theories explored within it as an expansion of the work itself. Facing down difficult issues like trauma, discrimination, and the vulnerability of the body, Beitiks looks to commonalities across species and disciplines as means of developing resilience and cultivating communities. Rather than paint a picture of glorious potential utopias, Beitiks takes a hard look at herself as an embodiment of the values explored in the work, and stays with the difficult, sucky, troubling, work to be done. Performing Resilience for Systemic Pain is a vulnerable book about the quiet presence and hard looking needed to shift systems away from their oppressive, destructive realities.

This useful resource gives you the knowledge, tools, and encouragement you need to embark on your journey to becoming a hardier, more successful person. More than experience or training, resilience in the face of stressful situations and rapid changes determines whether you ultimately succeed or fail in the workplace. It allows you to thrive even in tumultuous conditions, to turn potential disasters into growth opportunities. The good news for the legions of other workers who become overwhelmed by stress is that resilience in the face of life’s problems is not an inborn personality trait, but a set of skills and attitudes that you can learn and develop. Packed with insightful examples, case studies, and self-assessment tools, Resilience at Work explains how to: Approach change as a meaningful challenge no matter how stressful the circumstances, and stay committed to your work, rather than detaching and giving up. Gain control by understanding the upside and the downside of change, and take actions to influence beneficial outcomes. Turn stressful changes to your advantage and map out sound problem-solving strategies. Resolve ongoing conflicts and build an environment of assistance and encouragement between you and your coworkers. Decrease feelings of isolation and powerlessness by understanding the 3Cs that give you the ability to thrive amid disruptive changes: commitment, control, and challenge. Reorganization, downsizing, mergers, budget pressures, transfers, job insecurity, and more are producing today’s unpredictable, pressure-cooker conditions, and making it harder for less resilient people to achieve the success they deserve. Resilience at Work supplies insights and strategies you can use to combat your fear of change and uncover the opportunities that can be found in even the most stressful situations.

The Resilience Institute surveyed over 20,000 people to understand what drives resilience in individuals and groups across the world. 11 key factors were identified. These range from the obvious - focus, purpose, optimism, assertiveness and bounce - to the less expected - sleep quality, vitality, presence, decisiveness, values alignment and fulfilment. A resilient person breaks down life's challenges into achievable tasks, prepares biology and environment, then works with focus and determination. Things go wrong for them as for any of us, but they rely on their ability to bounce, recalibrate and recover. They engage with their whole being: physical, emotional and cognitive, dynamically playing to their strengths and working to mitigate risk areas. Resilience Mastery examines each of the 11 key factors, weaving together inspiring stories from people who have achieved success in their fields. The book suggests that, as a species, we are using outdated hardware in an upgraded environment. We're easily swayed by groupthink and clever marketing. Food scientists have discovered bliss points that make manufactured food irresistible. Behavioural scientists and UX designers have discovered technology bliss points that addict us to devices. At the core of our nervous system lies a freeze, fight and flight response. None of these help us in a brave new world. To be effective and to reach our dreams we need presence, purpose, vitality and focus. We need to upgrade the quality of the challenges we tackle so that we can align our actions with our values and purpose. We need to master skills that will enable us to live a life of vitality and, ultimately, reach our potential.

Resilience has become an important topic on the safety research agenda and in organizational practice. Most empirical work on resilience has been descriptive, identifying characteristics of work and organizing activity which allow organizations to cope with unexpected situations. Fewer studies have developed testable models and theories that can be used to support interventions aiming to increase resilience and improve safety. In addition, the absent integration of different system levels from individuals, teams, organizations, regulatory bodies, and policy level in theory and practice imply that mechanisms through which resilience is linked across complex systems are not yet well understood. Scientific efforts have been made to develop constructs and models that present relationships; however, these cannot be characterized as sufficient for theory building. There is a need for taking a broader look at resilience practices as a foundation for developing a theoretical framework that can help improve safety in complex systems. This book does not advocate for one definition or one field of research when talking about resilience; it does not assume that the use of resilience concepts is necessarily positive for safety. We encourage a broad approach, seeking inspiration across different scientific and practical domains for the purpose of further developing resilience at a theoretical and an operational level of relevance for different high-risk industries. The aim of the book is twofold: 1. To explore different approaches for operationalization of resilience across scientific disciplines and system levels. 2. To create a theoretical foundation for a resilience framework across scientific disciplines and system levels. By presenting chapters from leading international authors representing different research disciplines and practical fields we develop suggestions and inspiration for the research community and practitioners in high-risk industries.
