Excerpt from Bulletin of the Pennsylvania Museum, Vol. 20: October, 1907 The most far reaching change of this century, the fifteenth, was the intro duction of enamel; this consisted of colored glass ground to a powder; the powder, or pigment as it should be called, was, and is, mixed with fat oil, or with gum and water, to make the particles adhere when the mixture is painted upon the glass. In the kiln the medium is burned away and the ground glass pigment melted, causing it to adhere, more or less firmly to the sheet of glass upon which it is painted. The beautiful diaper patterns note' especially shields in the illustration dated1588 - are done in such enamel. The part to be diapered is covered with matt enamel and fired. A second matt is then spread over the first, and when dry the pattern _is etched with a pointed instrument, even with a needle, so that the result is like the finest lace. Note, too, the clever way the needle is used to give life, by lights and half tones, tothe fur of a bear in one of the glasses (not illustrated), to the fur of the gryphons in the second illustration, also to jewels, to the glisten ing light on armor, etc. In Swiss glass the enamel is so well managed that an exquisite effect, unattainable by other means, is produced. In large windows exposed to the weather and to the effects of time, the enamel is wont to flake off with dis astrous results. The Swiss seem to have avoided this misfortune, whether from the smallness of the subject or the greater skill -of the artist is difficult to determine. Excerpt from Pennsylvania Library Notes, 1914, Vol. 7 We have now taken up the second and more important part of our plan, the use of the library in the work. The difficulties are that foreign-born working men and women either do not know' of the library, or fear that they will be unwelcome. Once persuaded to enter, they need immediate personal attention. Index cards are impossible to them; the Open shelf is Often almost useless; they know little or nothing of the proper use of books. In short, they require much painstaking individual help from the librarian. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Colonel Moses Hazen’s 2nd Canadian Regiment was one of the first “national” regiments in the American army. Created by the Continental Congress, it drew members from Canada, eleven states, and foreign forces. “Congress’s Own” was among the most culturally, ethnically, and regionally diverse of the Continental Army’s regiments—a distinction that makes it an apt reflection of the union that was struggling to create a nation. The 2nd Canadian, like the larger army, represented and pushed the transition from a colonial, continental alliance to a national association. The problems the regiment raised and encountered underscored the complications of managing a confederation of states and troops. In this enterprising study of an intriguing and at times “infernal” regiment, Holly A. Mayer marshals personal and official accounts—from the letters and journals of Continentals and congressmen to the pension applications of veterans and their widows—to reveal what the personal passions, hardships, and accommodations of the 2nd Canadian can tell us about the greater military and civil dynamics of the American Revolution. Congress’s Own follows congressmen, commanders, and soldiers through the Revolutionary War as the regiment’s story shifts from tents and trenches to the halls of power and back. Interweaving insights from borderlands and community studies with military history, Mayer tracks key battles and traces debates that raged within the Revolution’s military and political borderlands wherein subjects became rebels, soldiers, and citizens. Her book offers fresh, vivid accounts of the Revolution that disclose how “Congress’s Own” regiment embodied the dreams, diversity, and divisions within and between the Continental Army, Congress, and the emergent union of states during the War for American Independence.

Excerpt from Pennsylvania Grange News, 1905-1906, Vol. 2 The ocean itself 'was the object most studied during the voyage, as it was always present and presented a great variety of aspects. For some hours its surface would appear almost as smooth and as transparent as glass. Then without visible cause it would break and become choppy. This choppy con dition would perhaps give way to one where larger waves with an undulating motion would seem to glory in the possession of a reserve force too large for measurement. As their strength, size and height would increase, the troughs between them would be correspondingly deeper and one could not help but feel how weak and helpless was man and his invention in comparison with this power, which seems to be allied to infinity itself.
