Most epidemiologic studies of risk factors for atherosclerosis have been conducted in adult populations, yet there is now evidence that the vascular disease process begins at a young age. This book reviews recent findings that allow physicians to identify and manage children and adolescents who are at the highest risk for the development of premature cardiovascular disease in later life. It covers cholesterol levels, blood pressure, body size, obesity, coronary artery calcification and carotid artery thickness, and discusses the identification, familial aggregation, tracking and management of each of these risk factors.

Abstract: Atherosclerosis and hypertension, common causes of death in adults, may originate in childhood. Genetic, environmental, and nutritional factors may contribute to the disorders, but may also have preventive value in children. Investigations concerning the earliest origins of these disorders are presented, with a focus on those areas of research which represent potential medical strategies for prevention of atherosclerosis and hypertension. The predictive value of nutrition, obesity, cigarette smoking, plasma lipids and lipoproteins, serum cholesterol, heredity, blood pressure, and other risk factors is examined. Sociological and cultural dietary studies, such as the design of lipid profiles in children, are described; these are aimed at reducing cardiovascular risks in certain populations by fat-modified diets. The effect of socioeconomic status on the development of obesity in children is evaluated.

Pediatric lipidology is a relatively new field of pediatrics. Premature cardiovascular diseases account for 30% of mortality in the United States. There is a heightened awareness regarding early recognition, prevention and management of childhood dyslipidemia. This book fulfils the need for a concise, quick-reference guide on clinical approach to the management of pediatric lipid disorders. Rational and optimal medical practice approaches are outlined throughout the text. Current clinical guidelines for treatment of genetic and acquired pediatric dyslipidemias are reviewed with an emphasis on new data and novel therapeutic options. This book is aimed to guide clinical decisions and improve care of at-risk youth in the primary prevention of premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Written by experts in the field, Pediatric Dyslipidemia includes the most up-to-date scientific and clinical information for pediatricians, endocrinologists, primary care practitioners and any other medical practitioners treating children with dyslipidemia.

This book discusses all aspects of non-pharmacologic approaches to primary and secondary CVD prevention. It highlights the strength of evidence for particular diet styles in CVD prevention, including plant-based diets, the Mediterranean diet, the DASH diet, and low-carbohydrate diets. Chapters present evidence and future directions for diet and nutrition in diseases related to CVD, such as dyslipidemia, cardiometabolic disease (pre-diabetes, the metabolic syndrome, type-2 diabetes mellitus), and obesity. Finally, the book reviews novel and emerging aspects of dietary intervention in CVD prevention, such as dietary approaches to inflammation and the role of the microbiome in CVD. Up-to-date, evidence-based, and clinically oriented, Prevention and Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease: Nutritional and Dietary Approaches is an essential resource for physicians, residents, fellows, and medical students in cardiology, clinical nutrition, family medicine, endocrinology, and lipidology.

This timely, concise title provides an important update on clinical lipid management. Using information from recent clinical trials and in special populations, the book begins by offering an easy-to-read overview of LDL, HDL, and triglyceride metabolism and the genetics of lipid disorders. The link between inflammation and lipids, and how this relates to atherosclerosis development, is also addressed, as are the measures of subclinical atherosclerosis in patients with abnormal lipid levels. Lipid abnormalities in children, with a particular focus on vulnerable populations (with an emphasis on ethnicity and childhood obesity), are covered. The treatment goals and approaches for managing lipids in the clinic are thoroughly discussed, emphasizing the important role of statin use and addressing controversies of lipid management in special populations such as heart failure, end stage kidney disease and fatty liver disease. Of special note, an important update on how new HIV medications impact lipid levels is provided. In all, Lipid Management: From Basics to Clinic, is an invaluable, handy resource for understanding changes in lipids in different populations and for sharpening the clinical approach to managing complicated lipid cases.
