Through a typological analysis of work organization among the Hmong, this paper examines the social relations engendered, reinforced and transformed through changing processes of agricultutral production. The analysis advances the work on Hmong economy carried out earlier by the Geddes and leads to a critique of the idea of a 'hill tribe peasant economy' put forward by Evan Van Roy in his study Economic Systems of Northern Thailand. The paper concludes by considering the implications of the author's analysis to development plans in the area.

Public pressure and societal changes induce interventions and policies, which aim to transform agriculture and food provision. This book shows that for upscaling novel practices and organizational models it is important to include meso-level regime aspects in analysis and practice. The argument presented is that our understanding of the human and social dimensions of transformation processes can be enriched by anchoring practice and policy in social theory. A focus on transitions offers a clear view on the direction and velocity of change. This publication aims to complement this by highlighting theoretical insights in the social or institutional mechanisms enabling or hindering change. Essays on a selection of theorists, varying from idealist or materialist accounts, to actor or system approaches, examine what the presented explanatory framework on social change offers in terms of guidance for intervention and action. This thesis examines the role of agricultural service organizations in the rural transformation processes in Uzbekistan, which has experienced a chain of agricultural reforms since 1991. These organizations, apart from providing services (i.e. provision of fertilizers, seeds, machinery), fulfill many other socio-political functions. They also act as a social security net for their personnel. The book's analysis reveals that agrarian transformation has produced three types of service organizations, which differ in their distance from and importance for the government and the state procurement system.
