Patches loved being a police horse. Officer Mike came to the stable every day to take care of him and ride him through the city park on their daily route. They would meet families and talk with boys and girls about Officer Mike's job and Patches. The children always asked about the beautiful heart-shaped patch of hair on Patches' shoulder. One day, while Patches and Officer Mike were patrolling the park, there was trouble, and the two sprang into action to help a lady. They chased and caught the thief as he tried to escape the mounted police officer. This book shows a positive and friendly relationship between families, especially children and law enforcement. The readers of this book will see how the police are always there to help, serve, and protect us. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to C.O.P.S., an organization that benefits the lives of the surviving families of law enforcement officers who gave their lives in the line of duty.

I adopted Patches, a young Border Collie Mix, on July 2nd, 1993. Intelligent, fun-loving and very energetic, daily runs, walks and long squirrel chases, became our daily routine. When it came time to find Patches a companion, we found an advertisement for Australian Shepherd Rescue. Since Aussies are also herding dogs, we thought it might be a good match. We contacted the Rescue and tried to adopt a deaf puppy but she was adopted before we could meet her. A few weeks later, they called us, about Katie. Katie was 4 months old and had limited sight, but could hear. Katie did not care that she could not see well, only that sometimes, she would be hurt by other dogs. Patches accepted Katie and taught her to use her other senses. Katie began our love for Australian Shepherds. Smart, funny and highly trainable, the Aussie motto is that their owners will never again, be alone. We hope you enjoy this story, the first of many lessons they have taught us.

While palliative care has adopted a holistic approach to treatment, medication driven symptom management ostensibly forms the critical aspect of care. Prescribing in palliative care can be extremely complex because the patient may often have comorbidity, or occasionally multimorbidity. The associated polypharmacy further complicates the pharmacological management of symptoms being caused by the palliative condition. This can be daunting for healthcare professionals and can negatively impact upon the effectiveness of care provided. Fully revised and updated, the third edition of Drugs in Palliative Care provides an accessible and succinct overview of the main drugs that are encountered in palliative care clinical practice. The text begins by providing a clinical pharmacology overview and prescribing guidance, then contains over 160 monographs of palliative care drugs, in an easy to access A-Z format.

This memoir is a riveting account of what it's like to be a professional firefighter, from rookie to chief officer, over the course of a 31-year career. The anecdotes are funny, sad, and grim: all serve to educate readers about a profession that many dreamed about when they were children but would never pursue or truly understand. Chief Howes provides a better understanding of the profession and respect for the men and women who protect our communities by relating his own experiences as well as those of other firefighters in some of the busiest stations in the country. The author is donating 10% of royalties to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, the nonprofit group dedicated to the development and expansion of programs to honor our fallen fire heroes and assist their families and coworkers.

Written by a world renowned biologist, this volume offers a comprehensive synthesis of current research in this rapidly expanding area of population biology. It covers both the essential theory and a wide range of empirical studies, including the author's groundbreaking work on the Glanville fritillary butterfly. It also includes practical applications to conservation biology. The book describes theoretical models for metapopulation dynamics in highly fragmented landscapes and emphasizes spatially realistic models. It presents the incidence function model and includes several detailed examples of its application. Accessible to advanced undergraduate and graduate students, Metapopulation Ecology will be a valuable resource for researchers in population biology, conservation biology, and landscape ecology.

Takes the hallmarks of metapopulation theory to the next level by considering a group of communities, each of which may contain numerous populations, connected by species interactions within communities and the movement of individuals between communities. This book seeks to understand how communities work in fragmented landscapes.

Enlarged, enhanced and internationalized edition of the first restoration ecology textbook to be published, with foreword by Dr. Steven Whisnant of Texas A&M University and Chair of the Society of Ecological Restoration. Since 2006, when the first edition of this book appeared, major advances have taken place in restoration science and in the practice of ecological restoration. Both are now accepted as key components of the increasingly urgent search for sustainability at global, national, and community levels – hence the phrase 'New Frontier' in the title. While the first edition focused on ecosystems and landscapes in Europe, this new edition covers biomes and contexts all over the world. Several new chapters deal with broad issues such as biological invasions, climate change, and agricultural land abandonment as they relate to restoration science and ecological restoration. Case studies are included from Australia, North America, and the tropics. This is an accessible textbook for senior undergraduate and graduate level students, and early career scientists. The book also provides a solid scientific background for managers, volunteers, and mid-career professionals involved in the practice of ecological restoration. Review of the first edition: "I suspect that this volume will find its way onto the shelves of many restoration researchers and practitioners and will be used as a key text in graduate courses, where it will help fill a large void. My own copy is already heavily bookmarked, and will be a constant source of research ideas and lecture material." Ecology, Genetics and Evolution of Metapopulations is acollection of specially commissioned articles that looks at fragmented habitats, bringing together recent theoretical advances and empirical studies applying the metapopulation approach. Several chapters closely integrate ecology with genetics and evolutionary biology, and others illustrate how metapopulation concepts and models can be applied to answer questions about conservation, epidemiology, and speciation. The extensive coverage of theory from highly regarded scientists and the many substantive applications in this one-of-a-kind work make it invaluable to graduate students and researchers in a wide range of disciplines. - Provides a comprehensive and authoritative account of all aspects of metapopulation biology, integrating ecology, genetics, and evolution - Developed by recognized experts, including Hanski who won the Balzan Prize for Ecological Sciences - Covers novel applications of the metapopulation approach to conservation
