"Religion, Supernaturalism, the Paranormal, and Pseudoscience" provides a comprehensive rejoinder to the challenges posed to science, scientific anthropology, evolutionary theory and rationality by the advocates of supernatural, paranormal, and pseudoscientific perspectives and modes of thought associated with the current rise of irrationalism, antiintellectualism, and emboldened religious fundamentalism and violence. Drawing upon H. Sidky’s scientific anthropological background and ethnographic field research of supernatural and paranormal beliefs and practices in several cultures over three decades, the book answers several important questions: Why do humans have a proclivity for the supernatural and paranormal thinking? Why has humanity remained shackled to sets of ideas inherited from a violent past that have no basis in reality and which bestow an illusionary solace, promote bloodshed, endless cruelties and fervent hatreds, and have come at a high cost? Why have ancient superstitions been held as sacred, inviolate truths while other aspects of the archaic belief systems of which they were a part have long been discarded? Why have not humans outgrown religion and paranormal beliefs?

Ally Carter’s megabestselling Gallagher Girls series meets Veronica Mars with a paranormal twist when Jillian Cade’s (fake!) private eye service unearths far more than she bargained for. Jillian Cade doesn’t believe in the paranormal, unlike her famous father, a professor and expert on the occult. Ever since he abandoned her to travel the world for “research,” she’s milked his reputation—and all the suckers who believe in the stuff—by taking over his private investigation firm. After all, a high school junior has to take care of herself, especially when she’s on her own. Ironically, it’s when she takes on a case that might involve a totally non-paranormal missing person that things get strange. Particularly when Sky Ramsey—a new boy at school who insists on becoming her partner—won’t shut up about succubi, of all things. As they investigate, Jillian is surprised by her feelings for Sky, which threaten to derail the investigation. But that surprise is no match for the shock of learning that there may be something to Sky’s succubi obsession after all.

Courageous scientists challenge the dominant paradigm of reality. Why are they so brave and what does their research reveal? What is reality? Is there more than we know from our five senses? Vanguard scientists believe there is more than we see so they formulate a non-materialist paradigm that expands human potential, to include mind and matter interaction. Since going against the dominant worldview provokes opposition, this book explores the personal backgrounds of the scientists to find out why they are so courageous. We learn that there is another dimension that allows for enhanced abilities. Based on interviews conducted by Gayle Kimball, The Mysteries of Reality: Dialogues with Visionary Scientists reports on the current research and personal characteristics of visionaries from around the world.

This novel is loosely based on my real life but not 100% entirely. This is a book that I am hoping will make readers more confident about themselves and their own lives. The novel focuses on mental illness, drug addiction, suicide, and love. There is a lot of explicit language used throughout most of the novel as well as focusing on the topic of mental illness, loss of loved ones and the genuine struggle of living life as a human on planet Earth. This novel represents various struggles that I and other people deal with throughout day to day life. I’m hoping this book will be able to help those who struggle with mental illness, drug addiction, and loss of loved ones via suicide as well as religious confusion. It’s a dark read, but it has a fairly light, and happy ending.

The lives of three strangers interconnect in unforeseen ways–and with unexpected consequences–in acclaimed author Dan Chaon’s gripping, brilliantly written new novel. Longing to get on with his life, Miles Cheshire nevertheless can’t stop searching for his troubled twin brother, Hayden, who has been missing for ten years. Hayden has covered his tracks skillfully, moving stealthily from place to place, managing along the way to hold down various jobs and seem, to the people he meets, entirely normal. But some version of the truth is always concealed. A few days after graduating from high school, Lucy Lattimore sneaks away from the small town of Pompey, Ohio, with her charismatic former history teacher. They arrive in Nebraska, in the middle of nowhere, at a long-deserted motel next to a dried-up reservoir, to figure out the next move on their path to a new life. But soon Lucy begins to feel quietly uneasy. My whole life is a lie, thinks Ryan Schuyler, who has recently learned some shocking news. In response, he walks off the Northwestern University campus, hops on a bus, and breaks loose from his existence, which suddenly seems abstract and tenuous. Presumed dead, Ryan decides to remake himself–through unconventional and precarious means. Await Your Reply is a literary masterwork with the momentum of a thriller, an unforgettable novel in which pasts are invented and reinvented and the future is both seductively uncharted and perilously unmoored.

What exactly is the New Age movement? Why has it become the dominant force of the Zeitgeist, invading nearly every aspect of American life? After years of researching this burgeoning movement, columnist, author, and magician Henry Gordon is one of the world's foremost experts on every aspect of the New Age - its derivations and content, the people most involved in it, the forces that motivate and prolong it, and the enormous amount of money changing hands as the me generation takes on astrology, crystals, runes, channeling, mysticism, yoga, acupuncture, herbal medicine, telepathy, precognition, clairvoyance, biofeedback, biorhythms, reincarnation, and every sort of psychological technique for heightened awareness. At the forefront of the brouhaha is high-profile actress, lecturer, and free spirit Shirley MacLaine. This book is strictly unauthorized - a freewheeling and spirited roast of the New Age, including a history of trends leading to the movement (rooted in 19th-century occultism), and observations on the vast amount of coverage given to the movement (and to New Age celebrities) by the print and broadcast media.Although Gordon delights in skewering the absurdities of the New Age, there's a serious emphasis to his research and his message: While the gurus are busy channeling into new realities, they are becoming phenomenally rich without contributing in any significant way to the alleviation of human unhappiness - and very often, without making any sense at all.Sharp wit and common sense. Wise and often hilarious. -Rocky Mountain News
