The first study of one of the most innovative of contemporary novelists, Liz Jensen, and of the "otherworlds" in her fiction. Liz Jensen, a British author of eight novels, is among today's most innovative writers. Her literary thrillers occupy the terrain between realism and science fiction. This first study of Jensen centers on the very diverse "otherworlds" she creates in each of her novels, which can consist of an indeterminate space of ontological instability, a zone in which real and unreal converge to destabilize the realist text, as in Egg Dancing (1995) and TheNinth Life of Louis Drax (2004). In other novels the otherworld relies on defamiliarization: thus in War Crimes for the Home (2002) the experience of war is transformed by being seen from a woman's perspective. In stillother cases, the otherworld spans the novel's entire topos, as in The Paper Eater (2000), the full-blown utopia at the center of Jensen's oeuvre. Jensen's work approaches contemporary social issues such as religious fundamentalism, ecological disaster, and assisted procreation. Simultaneously, it displays a number of characteristics of erudite fiction, including self-reflexivity, inter- and intratextual reference, parody, pastiche, and burlesque. Notwithstanding the "popular" elements of Jensen's work, Helen E. Mundler's study adopts a rigorously academic approach to it, referencing canonical works but also more innovative texts, particularly by contemporary women writers, as points of comparison. Helen E. Mundler is Senior Lecturer in English Studies at UPEC (Université Paris-Est Créteil) with a research affiliation at the Université Paris-X Nanterre-La Défense.

"What started over a century ago with an orphaned bear tied to a tree in Overton Park has grown into one of the nation's top zoos. The Memphis Zoo, which attracts more than one million visitors each year, is nationally recognized not only as a tourist attraction but also for its giant panda research, captive breeding programs, and efforts to reintroduce endangered species into the wild. Established in 1906 by the Memphis Park Commission, the zoo has become a Memphis institution. It seems like everyone in Memphis has an Elvis story, but just as many Memphians have memories of the zoo and attractions like the Lion House, Monkey Island, or the free one-ring circus. The zoo has been fortunate to have many devoted staff members and volunteers over the years, and through hard work and dedication, they have built a first-class institution - not only for the animals but for the families, children, and all patrons who visit the zoo every day."--Page 4 of cover.

Teenage life in the swinging sixties, hanging out in coffee bars talking fashion and pop music, who could wish for more? But in August 1968, growing pains started to kick hard for 18-year-old office worker Jean Davison and adolescent idealism quickly turns to angst and emptiness. With her home life in chaos, Jean turns to a psychiatrist hoping for a sensible adult to talk to. That's where her problems really begin: a week's voluntary psychiatric rest is the start of one long nightmare of drugs, electric shock treatment and abuse which turn her into a zombie. Losing five years of her young life to the mental health system, Jean finally finds the courage to say "no" to drugs and turns her life around, finds love and returns to the mental health service as a worker. Balancing quotes from case number 10826, her actual case notes which reveal a diagnosis of chronic schizophrenia, with her own account of interviews with doctors, this memoir raises disturbing questions on the treatment of psychiatric patients, which are still relevant today Jean Davison, was born in 1950 into a working class family in Yorkshire She left school at 15 to work in a factory. After leaving the psychiatric system she returned to education to study for GCEs. She has worked as a secretary for the NSPCC and within the health service. In 1979 she met Ian who she later married. She later graduated from university with a first-class degree in literature and psychology. Still living in Yorkshire with Ian, she now works in mental health. The Dark Threads is her first book.
