Rampur is a small district in the state Uttar Pradesh. It was formerly a princely state in British India. Its social and psychological life still bears a few imprints of that bygone era. While stories and legends float in its air, Rampur is slowly opening its eyes to newer times. Being famous or, rather, notorious for its Rampuri Chaku, Rampur has its own ways of finding solutions to problems. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world and the lockdown was announced in India, Rampur responded to it in Rampuri style. In this book, I have tried to record the period of the first lockdown as it unfolded in Rampur. Often, the most disastrous situations are the ones that leave in our hands profound wisdom. How much wisdom I inculcated, I cannot say. For me, it was an emotional ride with infinite ups and downs.

This volume presents a comprehensive account of the COVID-19 pandemic, also known as the novel coronavirus pandemic, as it happened. Originating in China in late 2019, the COVID-19 outbreak spread across the entire world in a matter of three to four months. This volume examines the first responses to the pandemic, the contexts of earlier epidemics and the epidemiological basics of infectious diseases. Further, it discusses patterns in the spread of the disease; the management and containment of infections at the personal, national and global level; effects on trade and commerce; the social and psychological impact on people; the disruption and postponement of international events; the role of various international organizations like the WHO in the search for solutions; and the race for a vaccine or a cure. Authored by a medical professional and an economist working on the frontlines, this book gives a nuanced, verified and fact-checked analysis of the COVID-19 pandemic and its global response. A one-stop resource on the COVID-19 outbreak, it is indispensable for every reader and a holistic work for scholars and researchers of medical sociology, public health, political economy, public policy and governance, sociology of health and medicine, and paramedical and medical practitioners. It will also be a great resource for policymakers, government departments and civil society organizations working in the area.

In Pandemic: Tracking Contagions, From Cholera to Coronaviruses and Beyond, prizewinning science journalist Sonia Shah presents a startling examination of the pandemics that have ravaged humanity-and how history prepares us to confront the most serious acute global health emergency of our time. Interweaving history, original reportage, and personal narrative, Shah draws parallels between cholera, one of history's most deadly pandemic-causing pathogens, and the new diseases that stalk humankind today. To reveal how a new pandemic might develop, Shah tracks each stage of cholera's dramatic journey. Along the way she reports on the pathogens now following in its footsteps, from the MRSA bacterium that besieges her own family to the never-before-seen killers coming out of China's wet markets, the surgical wards of New Delhi, and the suburban backyards of the East Coast. Delving into the convoluted science, strange politics, and checkered history of one of the world's deadliest diseases, Pandemic is a work of epidemiological history like no other, with urgent lessons for today.

This book consists of nine chapters, written by international authorities, discussing various aspects of bioterrorism preparedness and response. Five of the chapters are agent-specific and highlight the pathogenesis, prevention and treatment, and the potential of specific organisms (Rickettsia and Yersinia pestis) or toxins (ricin, botulinum neurotoxins, and staphylococcal enterotoxins) to be used for nefarious purposes. Four chapters discuss different aspects of detecting and responding to a bioterrorism attack. These include methods for spatio-temporal disease surveillance, international laboratory response strategies, detection of botulinum neurotoxins in food and other matrices, and the use of physical methods (ie Raman spectroscopy) to detect spores.

Kabhi hum bhi tum bhi thhe aashna tumhein yaad ho ke na yaad ho Once you and I were friends, whether you remember it now or not--Momin Khan Momin This is a book about love—love for one’s country and for all that goes to make it one we can be proud to belong to. Poetry, it has been said, flourishes when all else is uncertain. With that in mind, renowned literary historian and translator, Rakhshanda Jalil, uses Urdu poetry to look at how the social fabric of secular India is changing. Rakhshanda delves into the past, to the events that have threatened communal harmony, from the bloodletting of partition, or the politics of successive elections, to communal riots, Mumbai, Gujarat and so on, to the present moment, to recent events around Ayodhya, cow slaughter and ‘love jihad’. The book is divided into four sections: politics, people, passions, places. Strewn with delightful, thoughtful Urdu couplets that bring depth, lyricism and gravitas to the narratives, the writer cautions us against current popular sentiments based on hating the ‘other’. Living in an India that now requires us to be resolutely one or the ‘other’, all of us are losing the wonderful capacity to contain within ourselves many seemingly diverse ideologies and beliefs which is a motif that is reiterated through the verses and words in this book. The section titled ‘People’ has the most delightful, charming vignettes of popular icons, from Tipu Sultan and Rani Lakshmi Bai to Gandhi and Nehru, from Ghalib and Majaz to Dilip Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, viewed through an Urdu lens that makes each person memorable, unique and an advocate of peace and unity. From essays doused in the language of secular patriotism like Har Dil Tiranga, to pieces redolent with nostalgia like Dopahar ki Dhoop Mein, Rakhshanda invokes the power of love, inclusivity and communal harmony that is the trademark of poetry and literature, and which must continue to permeate the way we live our lives if we want to bequeath a meaningful legacy to the generations to come in our country.
