In recent years, there has been considerable progress in our understanding of the treatment and diagnosis of cancer, leading to the development and availability of an increasing array of novel therapies. Concurrently, there has also been an increase in understanding and insight gained into effective management strategies in cancer supportive care which have enabled oncologists to reduce the adverse impact of cancer and its treatment. However, challenges, controversies and educational gaps remain. This concise yet comprehensive pocket guide provides oncologists and other healthcare professionals with essential, evidence-based guidance on the all major elements related to cancer supportive care, including pain management and end-of-life care. Edited by a world renowned oncologist, this volume outlines complex management issues common in cancer supportive care, including metabolic emergencies, febrile neutropenia, and spinal cord compression. SERIES OVERVIEW The Oxford American Mini-Handbooks are a series of concisely-formatted adaptations of Oxford American Handbooks. They provide a focused and succinct summary on a specific area of a particular discipline, serving as a portable, easily accessible resource at the point of care. These smaller volumes capture the essentials of assessment and treatment in an exceptionally affordable and more clinically relevant format. Featuring useful tables and bulleted lists, these books provide a readily available resource to specialists and general practitioners alike.

Part of the Oxford American Oncology Mini-Handbook series, this book serves as a succinct outline and memory refresher on hematoglogic cancer management. In recent years, rapid progress in the understanding and treatment of hematologic cancer has occurred, with many new and exciting treatment therapies now available to clinicians. These modalities have greatly improved the ability of oncologists to reduce the adverse impact of cancer and its treatment; furthermore, they have enabled patients to complete potentially curative treatments in an optimal fashion. Evidence-based clinical practice guidelines have emerged from a variety of professional organizations to guide clinical decisions and optimize the management of patients with malignant diseases. However, many of these guides are cumbersome and too lengthy; therefore, a need remains for an updated and portable cancer-care resource that enables the physician to treat the patient with the best information currently available. This volume will examine all major hematologic cancers, from malignant lymphoma to multiple myeloma and acute leukemia, as well as demonstrating the the most up-to-date therapies related to all of these.

The obesity pandemic continues to increase on a world-wide basis with over 70% of the United States population being either overweight or obese. Hematologic malignancies have recently been identified among the obesity associated malignancies spanning the lifespan from childhood to the elderly and include leukemia, myeloma, lymphoma and others. In addition to the etiologic association between obesity and hematologic malignancies, the presence of obesity has profound effects on therapy by impacting pharmacokinetics of chemotherapeutic agents, dose, adipocyte metabolism and drug distribution. These may be particularly important in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Another important aspect of the association of obesity with hematologic malignancies is the increased incidence of obesity in children who successfully complete therapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. This and other observations indicate important relations between the hematopoietic systems and fat metabolism. This volume on Energy Balance in Hematologic Malignancies will provide an important volume in this series and a basis for better understanding etiology, mechanisms, therapeutics implications and experimental approaches. This volume of energy balance and cancer will focus on the relation of obesity to hematologic malignancies, the epidemiology, potential mechanisms, and thereapeutic considerations including effects on pharmacologic and physical approaches as well as the delayed effects of therapy on energy balance.

Cytogenetics is the study of chromosome morphology, structure, pathology, function, and behavior. The field has evolved to embrace molecular cytogenetic changes, now termed cytogenomics. Cytogeneticists utilize an assortment of procedures to investigate the full complement of chromosomes and/or a targeted region within a specific chromosome in metaphase or interphase. Tools include routine analysis of G-banded chromosomes, specialized stains that address specific chromosomal structures, and molecular probes, such as fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and chromosome microarray analysis, which employ a variety of methods to highlight a region as small as a single, specific genetic sequence under investigation. The AGT Cytogenetics Laboratory Manual, Fourth Edition offers a comprehensive description of the diagnostic tests offered by the clinical laboratory and explains the science behind them. One of the most valuable assets is its rich compilation of laboratory-tested protocols currently being used in leading laboratories, along with practical advice for nearly every area of interest to cytogeneticists. In addition to covering essential topics that have been the backbone of cytogenetics for over 60 years, such as the basic components of a cell, use of a microscope, human tissue processing for cytogenetic analysis (prenatal, constitutional, and neoplastic), laboratory safety, and the mechanisms behind chromosome rearrangement and aneuploidy, this edition introduces new and expanded chapters by experts in the field. Some of these new topics include a unique collection of chromosome heteromorphisms; clinical examples of genomic imprinting; an example-driven overview of chromosomal microarray; mathematics specifically geared for the cytogeneticist; usage of ISCN’s cytogenetic language to describe chromosome changes; tips for laboratory management; examples of laboratory information systems; a collection of internet and library resources; and a special chapter on animal chromosomes for the research and zoo cytogeneticist. The range of topics is thus broad yet comprehensive, offering the student a resource that teaches the procedures performed in the cytogenetics laboratory environment, and the laboratory professional with a peer-reviewed reference that explores the basis of each of these procedures. This makes it a useful resource for researchers, clinicians, and lab professionals, as well as students in a university or medical school setting.

This unique book, written by specialists from the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia and South Africa, bridges the disciplines of clinical pathology, internal medicine and critical care in a single volume. The Manual is divided into three sections: haematology, haemostasis and transfusion medicine. Within each section, review chapters are augmented by contributions on selected topics of interest to the practitioner. Methods of sample collection and interpretation for routine haematology, haemostatic function and bone marrow analysis are reviewed and new developments, such as flow cytometry for typing leukaemias, outlined. The diagnosis and management of a range of major infectious, immune-mediated and neoplastic diseases of the haematopopietic system are discussed. A chapter on canine babesiosis is timely, given the recent reports of cases in the UK, and a chapter is also included on the feline pathogen Haemobartonella felis. A wealth of excellent colour photographs throughout the book illustrates cell types and abnormalities, plus techniques such as blood transfusion. The range of coverage and the practical information in this Manual will render it of great value in the practice setting.
