The Outcry, Henry James's final novel, is an effervescent comedy of money and manners. Breckenridge Bender, a very rich American with a distinct resemblance to J.P. Morgan, arrives in England with the purpose of acquiring some very great art; he is directed to Dedborough, the estate of the debt-ridden Lord Theign. But plutocrat and aristocrat come into unexpected conflict when a young connoisseur, out to establish his own reputation, declares a prize painting from the lord's collection to be in fact an even rarer, and pricier, work than had been thought. A popular success in its own day, but long unavailable since and now almost unknown, The Outcry is one of the most surprising and amusing of James's works. Here he explores questions of privilege and initiative, repute and honor, high art and base calculation, revisiting some of his favorite themes with a deft and winning touch.

The Outcry was a play written by Henry James in 1909, near the end of his most productive stage. He had written a number of plays, which had been performed to less than enthusiastic audiences, although they had garnered some critical acclaim. American producer Charles Frohman asked James to write a play for the 1909 London repertory season and he would be one of a group of distinguished writers such as Shaw and Maugham. The play was written but not performed. It was delayed due to the death of King Edward VII and ultimately not performed until after the death of Henry James himself. In the meantime, James decided to transform it into a novel. It was published in 1911 and was the last completed novel to be published before James' death. The plot of The Outcry concerned a group of wealthy Americans who were using their money to buy up British art collections. The play had an overtone of comedy to it, despite the serious veneer. Lord Theign, who has an impressive art gallery of old masters, has been driven into debt by the waywardness of his older daughter, Kitty Imber. He turns to the idea of selling off some of the masterpieces to an American collector, Breckinridge Bender.

It’s the 1980s. A priest is found murdered in his New Orleans rectory. When compromising videotapes are discovered in his bedroom, the Bishop and his staff withhold this damaging evidence from the police. The district attorney, a faithful Catholic and good friend of the Bishop, helps bury the truth. It’s an all-too-familiar story by now. But this is one of the first cases, long before the floodgates are opened two decades later. When Father Edward McMurray discovers the body and calls on his loyal nephew, Peter Moore, to remove the videotapes and examine them in private elsewhere, the two men must face the moral consequences of their participation in a cover-up that compromises their integrity and threatens to shatter their faith in the institution of the Catholic Church. Even as they uncover the dead priest’s most sordid secrets, the answer to the central question remains hidden: Who killed him and why? Thomas Zigal leads the reader through the darkest alleys of New Orleans as Father McMurray and Peter Moore conduct their own harrowing investigations before they finally confront the murderer in an explosive finale. Investigative journalist Jason Berry calls Outcry Witness “a spiritual thriller” and a “gripping story of a clergy abuse cover-up told from the inside.” Novelist and playwright Anthony Giardina describes the novel as “a riveting page turner and a deadly serious meditation on the confusion and hypocrisy” that continue to shake the Catholic Church and its devoted followers today.
