Out of the Flames is an extraordinary story - providing testament to the power of ideas, the enduring legacy of books, and the triumph of individual courage. Out of the Flames tracks the history of The Chrisitianismi Restituto, examining Michael Servetus's life and times and the politics of the first information during the sixteenth century. The Chrisitianismi Restituto, a heretical work of biblical scholarship, written in 1553, aimed to refute the orthodox Christianity that Michael Servetus' old colleague, John Calvin, supported. After the book spread through the ranks of Protestant hierarchy, Servetus was tried and agonizingly burned at the stake, the last known copy of the Restitutio chained to his leg. Servetus's execution marked a turning point in the quest for freedom of expression, due largely to the development of the printing press and the proliferation of books in Renaissance Europe. Three copies of the Restitutio managed to survive the burning, despite every effort on the part of his enemies to destroy them. As a result, the book became almost a surrogate for its author, going into hiding and relying on covert distribution until it could be read freely, centuries later. Lawrence and Nancy Goldstone follow the clandestine journey of the three copies through the subsequent centuries and explore its author's legacy and influence over the thinkers that shared his spirit and genius, such as Leibniz, Voltaire, Rousseau, Jefferson, Clarence Dorrow, and William Osler.

"Andrea Contos takes readers on a triumphant and terrifying journey, from fear and solitude to solidarity and vengeance. A complex and captivating thriller that kept me guessing at every turn." --Elle Cosimano, author of Finlay Donovan is Killing It We were like fire, the four of us. Catching each other's sparks until the flames grew, spread, raged beyond our control. We'll give them back the damage they left us with, burden them with the weight of our pain. We may be temporarily broken, but we will leave them forever charred. Ashes to ashes. It wasn't the kidnapping that ruined Cass Adams's life. It was the letters that came after. The pink envelopes that appear in her car, her locker, her bedroom. Notes from the man she escaped, telling her that he's always there, always watching. And that someday, he'll be back for her. The police say there's nothing they can do, and Cass resigns herself to live in fear until she reconnects with three old friends-three girls ready to exact vengeance on those who wronged them. But the deeper Cass digs, the more shocking the truth becomes, especially when she discovers that the person who ruined her life may be the only one who can save it.

‘A ruthlessly efficient, consistently surprising whodunnit. The depiction of the glowering inferno is so realistic you’re surprised to find your eyebrows aren’t singed’ Mark Sanderson, The Times A town under fire. A detective with something to prove. A killer hiding in plain sight. The small town of Rislake in the picturesque Blue Mountains is about to be engulfed by a major bushfire. The order has been given for the residents to clear out. But a last sweep uncovers one person is missing: Tracey Hilmeyer, wife of one of the firefighters tackling the blaze. Detective Kennard is in town to help with crowd control, but instead he finds himself driving straight towards the inferno to look for Tracey at the Hilmeyer home. When he gets there, he finds her dead at the bottom of the stairs, and it’s clear she was murdered. With the evacuation almost complete there is barely enough time to save the living never mind the dead. But Detective Kennard has something to prove and cannot let this one go. Can he solve her murder before the crime scene, and the entire town, turns to ash? 'Faster than a raging bushfire, Delargy paints a terrifying portrait of a town under siege, and the traumatized detective tracking down a murderer in its midst. Blistering stuff!' A blistering narrative delivered with cool prose – this book is on fire!' JO FURNISS 'Delargy ratchets the tension masterfully . . . Packed with atmosphere and as unpredictable as a bushfire, this is a searingly good thriller' HEATHER CRITCHLOW 'A terrific read, the best yet from a rising star in the world of crime writing' KATE RHODES 'Brilliantly menacing and evocative, the heat is set to high' ELEANOR RAY 'Intense, fierce and with a violence to match the fire itself. Simply superb. I felt every lungful of smoke and every lick of flame as I tore through it in two sittings!' ROBERT RUTHERFORD
