One of the fastest expanding fields in computing and telecommunications is Open Systems Interconnection (O.S.I.). The requirement for computers to communicate with each other has led to a need for standardisation. This in turn has produced an array of international, national, semi-official and proposed standards, and an accompanying wealth of acronyms. The author has compiled this invaluable book to guide readers through the resulting maze.

Communications Standards deals with the standardization of computer communication networks. This book examines the types of local area networks (LANs) that have been developed and looks at some of the relevant protocols in more detail. The work of Project 802 is briefly discussed, along with a protocol which has developed from one of the LAN standards and is now a de facto standard in one particular area, namely the Manufacturing Automation Protocol (MAP). Factors that affect the usage of networks, such as network management and security, are also considered. This book is divided into three sections and begins with an overview of various aspects of communications standards, paying particular attention to the ISO Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Network Layer. Conformance testing of protocols and the use of computers in the manufacturing industry are considered. The following chapters focus on the OSI Data Link Layer, Physical Layer, and Session Layer; management issues in OSI; the ISO File Transfer, Access and Management (FTAM) protocol; and the different environments in which OSI and IBM's Systems Network Architecture (SNA) are defined. Message-handling protocols, the CCITT Recommendation X.25, and high-level protocols on Ethernet are also described. This monograph will be of interest to professionals in the field of computer science.

CompTIA Network+ Certification Study Guide: Exam N10-004, Second Edition, offers a practical guide for those interested in pursuing CompTIA Network+ certification. It presents the fundamental terminology needed to perform duties as a network technician and to pass the CompTIA Network+ exam. The book begins with a brief history of the development of networks, including their origins and where they are heading. It describes network models such as centralized and decentralized, and distinguishes between a local area network (LAN) and a wide area network (WAN). The discussions include cable connections and termination for the Network+ exam; the meaning of convergence; and the most common network devices being used on small and large networks, including the Internet. The role of switches in improving network functionality and enhancing security is described. The book also contains chapters on wireless networking; Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model; Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP); wide area network (WAN) technologies; network security; and network management and troubleshooting. - New to this edition in accordance with the newly revised exam is an intensified focus on network security - Two NEW practice exams to help eliminate test-day jitters - Tiered chapter ending questions that allow for graduated learning - Covers everything from test taking techniques to advanced topics - keeping the beginner and intermediate IT professional in mind - Layout of the guide parallels the Network+ N10-004 objectives for ease of study
