Excerpt from The Origin and Formation of the Dental Follicle: The First Memoir on the Development of the Teeth An apology will reasonably be expected be expected for presenting this translation to the profession. It will require but few words, and I cheerfully offer it. The deficiency and inaccuracy of the literature, in our own language, on the origin and development of the "tooth-germ" and its associate parts, render it almost worthless, as compared with the more recent researches of foreign investigators. The only exception I would make is that of the valuable work of Professor Tomes. If anything more is required, I refer the reader to the following pages, which, so far as I have been able to do justice to the authors, will be their own apology. Some of you will remember that, nearly twenty years ago, one of the authors of this memoir, Dr. Magitot, in connection with Dr.Oh. Kobin, wrote a treatise entitled, The Genesis and Development of the Dental Follicle) to the Epoch of the Eruption of the Teeth, a large portion of which was translated for the Dental Cosmos. While the writers of that treatise gave a detailed and elaborate account of the development of the jaws and their anatomical constituents, that portion devoted to the origin and formation of the dental follicle was in many respects incomplete, and in some particulars erroneous. Ingle’s Endodontics, 7th edition, is the most recent revision of the text that has been known as the “Bible of Endodontics” for half a century. The new edition, published in two volumes, continues the tradition of including the expertise of international leaders in the field. Eighty-six authors contributed cutting-edge knowledge and updates on topics that have formed the core of this book for years. New chapters reflect the ways in which the field of endodontics has evolved over the 50 years since the pioneer John I. Ingle authored Endodontics. Ingle’s Endodontics will continue to be the standard against which all other endodontic texts will be measured. The 40 chapters are arranged in two volumes under three sections: The Science of Endodontics; The Practice of Endodontics: Diagnosis, Clinical Decision Making, Management, Prognosis; and Interdisciplinary Endodontics. With contributions from the world’s experts in all phases of the specialty, Ingle’s Endodontics, 7th edition promises to be an indispensable dentistry textbook, an essential part of every endodontist’s library.
