Excerpt from Membership Relations of Cooperative Associations: Fluid Milk To assist oflicers and managers of cooperative associations in solving their problems of membership relations, the Division of Cooperative Marketing has undertaken a series of studies, each of which was intended to include members belonging to a single commodity group or to Closely related groups. The purpose of each of these studies Is to find out the attitude of farmers toward the cooperative association operating in that region, to discover their appreciation of the services rendered by the cooperative, their reasons for having or not having membership in the cooperative. The causes of any dissatisfaction they may have with their organization, their understanding of economic principles underlying prices and marketing, and the methods used by the associations to lead the thinking of producers in their respective areas. The important factors in membership relations are what the pro ducers think are the facts regarding their association and their under standing of the marketing problems. The logical point of attack in building membership morale would seem to be the incorrect ideas now held by producers in the respective areas. If producers, mem bers and nonmembers, do not think correctly regarding the associa tions this thinking may be changed by additional information, properly interpreted. Excerpt from Membership Relations of Cooperative Associations (Cotton and Tobacco) The type of workers engaged in field service affects the attitude of members toward the work. The question, That do you think of the type of field men the association is employing? Brought forth the answer given in Table 22. A majority of all the replies indicated satisfaction with the kind of workers employed. In association 4, however, there were more answers indicating dissatisfaction than satisfaction, and from the association were a number of Don't know replies. The type of work engaged in by the field men and the type of men doing the work are factors affecting the views of members regarding them. The held workers in association 4 had been devoting much time and attention to making settlements of liquidated damages with contract Violators, an activity which was unpopular with many of the members. Among the replies tabulated in Table 22 as Other than good, were included some that criticized field men because of their lack of knowledge of farmers and farm problems. Others believed local men should be employed. Still others had the impression that the field-service department of their associations furnished a place for workers who had not made good elsewhere.
