Excerpt from Schools Administration: Including the Organization and Supervision of Schools It is difficulties like these which this book is intend ed to meet. It is not expected that theories of admin istration can be applied everywhere exactly as they are here given; but it is hoped that their presentation will be of substantial assistance to members of School Boards, Superintendents and Principals of schools, as well as to professional students of educa tion in Colleges and Normal Schools. Excerpt from Instruction in the Organization and Administration of Schools and School Systems To the equipment of knowledge of the subject-matter, the gentlemen who have already spoken have added the broad out look upon life gained by the study of the history of education, the record of past endeavor to produce efficient citizens, and the better knowledge of the individual and of the general laws by which he lives and moves and has his being. This attitude, born of knowledge as well as of sympathy, is well expressed by Kipling in his description of the relation of the officer to the men whom he has trained. Excerpt from The Principles of School Organization: A Comparative Study Chiefly Based on the Systems of the United States, England, Germany and France Seventh: Centralized administration relieves school officers of the continual struggle over curriculum and courses of study to which such a large proportion of their time must otherwise be given, and leaves them free to carry on the great work of teaching and to develop methods of instruction to a high order of perfection. This is substantially illustrated in Germany. Nowhere is there a more intelligent and active body of teachers than in the various German states. Germany has been the great home of pedagogy, whither, only a few years ago, all students from the United States who wished to study education were obliged to go. We may fairly ask the question whether the great development in methods of education which has taken place in Germany would have produced so many valuable re sults if the teachers, and particularly the principals of schools, had been obliged to consume a large part of their time in the discussion of the curriculum and of purely administrative ques tions. Excerpt from The High School: Its Function, Organization and Administration Part I deals with the function of the high school. Means cannot be intelligently chosen or wisely used in the absence of clearly defined aims that will actually serve as guides in practice. In the belief that generalized aims do not serve as useful guides in the daily work of the school, the several points of view from which the education of youth Should be regarded have been emphasized and discussed in detail. The work of the secondary school has been viewed heretofore quite exclusively from the standpoint of intellectual develop ment. Physical needs, employment of leisure time, work interests, social adjustments, all need to be taken into ac count in any discussion of the education of youth. These various viewpoints have been given rather full treatment in order to make clear the true function of the high school. Throughout Part I the social needs and interests of youth have been stressed. The needs and interests of girls have not received at the hands of the school the discriminative attention they de serve. Secondary schools, so long exclusively boys' schools, have not until very recently made any readjustments to meet the requirements of girls. In view of this, a chapter has been given to the discussion of the education of girls. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
