Excerpt from Oregon Grown Gladiolus Bulbs, 1929 The gladiolus is easy to grow. It will do well in almost any good garden soil, but a rich, sandy loam is best. Do not plant in the shade of trees or buildings. Especially stay away from trees and shrubs, whose tiny roots suck all the moisture out of the ground in a wide circle. May be planted from middle of April to latter-part of May. Plant in rows, in four or five-inch deep trenches, five to six inches between each bulb in 'the row and at least twenty inches between the rows.
