Exotic methods refer to specific functions within general soft computing methods such as genetic algorithms, neural networks and rough sets theory. They are applied to ordinary shares for a variety of financial purposes, such as portfolio selection and optimization, classification of market states, forecasting of market states and data mining. This is in contrast to the wide spectrum of work done on exotic financial instruments, wherein advanced mathematics is used to construct financial instruments for hedging risks and for investment. In this book, particular aspects of the general method are used to create interesting applications. For instance, genetic niching produces a family of portfolios for the trader to choose from. Support vector machines, a special form of neural networks, forecast the financial markets; such a forecast is on market states, of which there are three OCo uptrending, mean reverting and downtrending. A self-organizing map displays in a vivid manner the states of the market. Rough sets with a new discretization method extract information from stock prices."

This book operationalizes the idea of political representation, which is fundamental to modern democracies. Both individual representatives and representative bodies are evaluated using the indices of popularity (the average percentage of the population whose opinion is represented on topical policy issues) and universality (the percentage of issues for which the prevailing public opinion is represented). Viewed as objective functions, these indices can aid in the search for optimal representatives and representative bodies. By replacing the consistency analysis of the social choice axioms with the calculation of the best compromises, the paradoxes of social choice, such as those of Condorcet and Arrow, can be overcome. These indices also form the core of an alternative election method that is aimed at enhancing policy representation — a recent concept of political representation, which is not supported by the conventional voting systems shaped during the American and French Revolutions. This method is tested in a series of election experiments that focus on implementation details. In addition, non-societal applications such as MCDM, finance or traffic control are considered, where the objects that reflect the properties or behavior of other objects are regarded as their “representatives.” Given its scope, the book will appeal to political scientists, economists and operations researchers, as well as to politicians interested in improving democratic performance and electoral system design.

People suffering from serious illnesses improve their survival chances by adopting a positive attitude and refusing to believe in the worst. Stress is the great killer of modern life. Ancient Eastern mind-body techniques can bring us balance and healing. We’ve all heard claims like these, and many find them plausible. When it comes to disease and healing, we believe we must look beyond doctors and drugs; we must look within ourselves. Faith, relationships, and attitude matter. But why do we believe such things? From psychoanalysis to the placebo effect to meditation, this vibrant history describes our commitments to mind-body healing as rooted in a patchwork of stories that have allowed people to make new sense of their suffering, express discontent with existing care, and rationalize new treatments and lifestyles. These stories are sometimes supported by science, sometimes quarrel with science, but are all ultimately about much more than just science.

The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) is the global body for professional accountants. With over 100 years of providing world-class accounting and finance qualifications, the ACCA has significantly raised its international profile in recent years and now supports a BSc (Hons) in Applied Accounting and an MBA.BPP Learning Media is an ACCA Official Publisher. P2 is a very challenging paper which builds on the knowledge and skills acquired at earlier levels in the preparation and analysis of financial reports for single entities and groups. It takes these areas to a higher level, putting into context the role of the accountant as a professional steward and adviser, who is responsible to the stakeholders of an organisation. It has five main sections: 1. Regulatory and ethical framework and current issues 2. Reporting the financial performance of entities 3. Group financial statements 4. Specialised entities 5. Analysis of the financial performance of entitiesThe main new topics introduced at this level relate to group accounts, but other topics are tested with a different emphasis and in more depth than at the Fundamentals Level. We provide material for both International and UK streams. International is now the ACCA main stream.Question practice is essential for all papers, but for P2, there is a strong "e;fear factor"e;. Questions look intimidating, and it is only once you get into the detail that you realise that there are easy marks and more complicated parts that are not essential to get a pass. Our practice and revision kit follows the order of the text and there are a large number of questions on all syllabus topics. Our kit gives ample opportunity to practice the long, 50 mark case studies, which will be the compulsory Section A question in the exam. Three mock exams, including the Pilot Paper, also reflect this format. As a gentle introduction to many of the topics, there are preparation questions giving instructions in basic techniques. Most questions have marking schemes, so that you can see that the examiner awards marks for these techniques. For P2 international, a revised edition of the kit is being produced for December 2008 to reflect the changes to IFRS 3 Business combinations. This will be available at the end of September.BPP Learning Media is the publisher of choice for many ACCA students and tuition providers worldwide.
