Excerpt from Oration, Delivered Before the Few and Phi Gamma Socities, of Emory College It is objected that our slaves are debarred educational advantages. The objection is well taken, but is without great force their station m society makes education neither necessary nor useful, besides it comes with a bad grace from England - eight-tenths of whose pooulation have been de barred them by causes stronger than law, and if they could by any means obtain them, it is difficult to show the advantages of education to English laborers, who are doomed to toil twelve hours a day for a money compensation inadequate to supply their lowest physical wants. We are reproached that the marriage relation is neither recognised nor protected by law. This reproach is not wholly unjust, this is an evil not yet remedied by law, but marriage is not inconsistent with the institution of slavery as it exists among us, and the objection, therefore, lies rather to an incident than to the essence of the system. But even in this we have deprived the slave of no pre-existing right. We found the race without any knowledge of, or regard for the institution of marriage, and we are reproached for not having as yet, secured that and all other blessings of civilization. The separation of families is much relied on by the abolitionists in Europe and America. Some of the slaveholding states have already made partial provision against this evil, and all of them may do so; but the objection is far more formidable in theory than practice, even without legislative interposition. Excerpt from An Oration Delivered at Chapel Hill on Wednesday, June 24, 1829, Being the Day Before the Commencement of the College: According to the Annual Appointment of the Two Literary Societies Belonging to the University The subject to which your attention is respectfullv soli cited, is one which i know must be acceptable to every Ame rican ear: the raosrnc'rs or one common country. If there is any tonic which, more than others, is: selected as the theme of those who aim, either by the voice or the pen, to captivate the hearing and the hearts of this nation, it is the splendid anticipations of its future destiny. On these We all love to dwell; and while we lose ourselves in fond prophecies of our country's fortunes, we find a soothing oblivion, or at least alleviation, of any chagrlns which her present/ imperfectiors Wed. So far the effect. Is happy. But it may he doubted whether the American citizen, by indulging too sanguine hopes of the future, is not led to depreciate the value of his present blessings, and thus to deprive himself of that fullness of contentment and gratitude, which is called for by the already auspicious re sults of our government, under the smiies of Providence. This dissatisfaction with the present. And this longing after some good in reserve, is to live for posterity - is to make ourselves anxious. That they may be exempt from anxiety. But should we taste with indifference the sweet fruits which a hounteous heaven is now dropping into our lap. Or thrust them aside with disgust because they are not as large or as luscious as we imagine might be yielded by the same tree' when brought to a higher state of cultivation? And are we sure that the future'is to surpass the present? Are we sure that our country is not now in its meridian of hap pinces and glory. And thatno subsequent age will be as prosperous as this? Let usytake a view. Of our present, con 'dition, and indulge in some speculations on what we have to fear and What to hope, from the revolution ofyears. Excerpt from Oration and Poem, Delivered in Manning Hall, on Class Day, June 21, 1872 But this idea, so opposed to the tendencies of the times, was slowly received and imperfectly realized. As a theory, a conception, it received its fullest development in the Mid dle Ages, that period of chaos from whose warring elements all the great principles of modern liberties and modern pro gress have issued. The scholastic philosophers, refusing the blind leadership of dogma in their study of the Scriptures, and approaching them under the guidance of reason, sought to probe to the very bottom their grandest and most subtle truth. Rejecting the world of appearances, they sought to build up a real world a world of spiritual essence. From their concep tion of the unity of the Divine essence, they argued to the unity of the essence of Humanity. Mankind, they held, was a perfect whole of which each individual soul formed a part. They regarded Humanity as expressing a two-fold aspect, spiritual and secular. From this idea thus developed, arose the two great theories of the Middle Ages, one, of a univer sal Church, visibly representing the spiritual part of Human ity; the other, of a universal Empire, the visible expression of the secular part of humanity. At the head of these was a Pope and Emperor in whom Humanity was embodied and brought nearer to God. Between these two arose a struggle for supremacy, which constitutes the great drama of mediaeval history and powerfully determined the course of civilization. Hoosiers and the American Story

Hoosiers and the American Story
Author: Madison, James H.
Publisher: Indiana Historical Society
Total Pages: 359
Release: 2014-10
Genre: Juvenile Nonfiction
ISBN: 0871953633

A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.

For the past three decades, many history professors have allowed their biases to distort the way America’s past is taught. These intellectuals have searched for instances of racism, sexism, and bigotry in our history while downplaying the greatness of America’s patriots and the achievements of “dead white men.” As a result, more emphasis is placed on Harriet Tubman than on George Washington; more about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II than about D-Day or Iwo Jima; more on the dangers we faced from Joseph McCarthy than those we faced from Josef Stalin. A Patriot’s History of the United States corrects those doctrinaire biases. In this groundbreaking book, America’s discovery, founding, and development are reexamined with an appreciation for the elements of public virtue, personal liberty, and private property that make this nation uniquely successful. This book offers a long-overdue acknowledgment of America’s true and proud history.
