This book introduces artificial neural network (ANN)-based Lagrange optimization techniques for a structural design of prestressed concrete structures based on Eurocode 2, and composite structures based on American Institute of Steel Construction and American Concrete Institute standards. The book provides robust design charts for prestressed concrete structures, which are challenging to achieve using conventional design methods. Using ANN-based design charts, the holistic design of a post-tensioned beam is performed to optimize design targets (objective functions), while calculating 21 forward outputs, in arbitrary sequences, from 21 forward inputs. Applies the powerful tools of ANN to the optimization of prestressed concrete structures and composite structures including columns and beams Multi-objective optimizations (MOO) of prestressed concrete beams are performed using an ANN-based Lagrange algorithm Offers a Pareto frontier using an ANN-based MOO for composite beams and composite columns sustaining multi-biaxial loads Heavily illustrated in color and with diverse practical design examples in line with EC2, ACI, and ASTM codes The book offers optimal solutions for structural designers and researchers, enabling readers to construct design charts to minimize their own design targets under various design requirements based on any design code.

With the advent of powerful computers and novel mathematical programming techniques, the multidisciplinary field of optimization has advanced to the stage that quite complicated systems can be addressed. The conference was organized to provide a platform for the exchanging of new ideas and information and for identifying areas for future research. The contributions covered both theoretical techniques and a rich variety of case studies to which optimization can be usefully applied.

While the weight of a structure constitutes a significant part of the cost, a minimum weight design is not necessarily the minimum cost design. Little attention in structural optimization has been paid to the cost optimization problem, particularly of realistic three-dimensional structures. Cost optimization is becoming a priority in all civil engineering projects, and the concept of Life-Cycle Costing is penetrating design, manufacturing and construction organizations. In this groundbreaking book the authors present novel computational models for cost optimization of large scale, realistic structures, subjected to the actual constraints of commonly used design codes. As the first book on the subject this book: Contains detailed step-by-step algorithms Focuses on novel computing techniques such as genetic algorithms, fuzzy logic, and parallel computing Covers both Allowable Stress Design (ASD) and Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) codes Includes realistic design examples covering large-scale, high-rise building structures Presents computational models that enable substantial cost savings in the design of structures Fully automated structural design and cost optimization is where large-scale design technology is heading, thus Cost Optimization of Structures: Fuzzy Logic, Genetic Algorithms, and Parallel Computing will be of great interest to civil and structural engineers, mechanical engineers, structural design software developers, and architectural engineers involved in the design of structures and life-cycle cost optimisation. It is also a pioneering text for graduate students and researchers working in building design and structural optimization.

This is a collection of several applications for condition monitoring and damage identification in bridge structures. Bridge structural condition monitoring is essential since it can provide early warning of potential defects in bridges, which may induce catastrophic accidents and result in huge economic loss. Such bridge condition monitoring relies on sensing techniques, especially advanced sensing techniques that can provide detailed information on bridge structures. Additionally, postprocessing systems can interpret the captured data and warn of any potential faults. This book will give students a thorough understanding of bridge condition monitoring.

The chapters which appear in this volume are selected studies presented at the First International Conference on Engineering and Applied Sciences Optimization (OPT-i), Kos, Greece, 4-6 June 2014 and works written by friends, former colleagues and students of the late Professor M. G. Karlaftis; all in the area of optimization that he loved and published so much in himself. The subject areas represented here range from structural optimization, logistics, transportation, traffic and telecommunication networks to operational research, metaheuristics, multidisciplinary and multiphysics design optimization, etc. This volume is dedicated to the life and the memory of Professor Matthew G. Karlaftis, who passed away a few hours before he was to give the opening speech at OPT-i. All contributions reflect the warmth and genuine friendship which he enjoyed from his associates and show how much his scientific contribution has been appreciated. He will be greatly missed and it is hoped that this volume will be received as a suitable memorial to his life and achievements.

Performance-Based Optimization of Structures introduces a method to bridge the gap between structural optimization theory and its practical application to structural engineering. The Performance-Based Optimization (PBO) method combines modern structural optimisation theory with performance based design concepts to produce a powerful technique for use in structural design. This book provides the latest PBO techniques for achieving optimal topologies and shapes of continuum structures with stress, displacement and mean compliance constraints. The emphasis is strongly placed on practical applications of automated PBO techniques to the strut-and-tie modelling of structural concrete, which includes reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. Basic concepts underlying the development of strut-and-lie models, design optimization procedure, and detailing of structural concrete are described in detail. Alternative approaches to topology optimization are also introduced. The book contains numerous practical design examples illustrating the nature of the load transfer mechanism of structures.

This book was written to make the material presented in my book, Stahlbetonbrucken, accessible to a larger number of engineers throughout the world. A work in English, the logical choice for this task, had been contemplated as Stahlbetonbrucken was still in its earliest stages of preparation. The early success of Stahlbetonbrucken provided significant impetus for the writing of Prestressed Concrete Bridges, which began soon after the publication of its predecessor. The present work is more than a mere translation of Stahlbetonbrucken. Errors in Stahlbetonbrucken that were detected after publication have been corrected. New material on the relation between cracking in concrete and corrosion of reinforce ment, prestressing with unbonded tendons, skew-girder bridges, and cable-stayed bridges has been added. Most importantly, however, the presentation of the material has been extensively reworked to improve clarity and consistency. Prestressed Concrete Bridges can thus be regarded as a thoroughly new and improved edition of its predecessor.
