Optical methods are now used routinely for the measurement of velocity, concentration, temperature, and other parameters in wide-ranging areas of industrial research and design such as IC engines, turbines, and combustors. Recent advances such as the use of high-resolution CCD cameras and the extension of flow mapping to three dimensions, make optical tools such as particle image velocimetry increasingly viable for use in the industrial environment. This excellent book presents new developments in optical diagnostic techniques in heat and fluid flow and offers an unparalleled opportunity for industrialists and academic researchers to exchange ideas. CONTENTS INCLUDE: Comparison of injector sprays for gasoline direct-injection engines The design, development, and preliminary results from a high-speed, optically accessed, single cylinder engine The reflected spectrum of complex multi-layered inhomogeneous highly scattering medium Development of full volume digital holography for particle measurement Improved liquid crystal thermography by using true-colour image processing technology Development of an optical measuring technique for the study of acoustical phenomena Spatio-temporal reconstruction of the unsteady wake of axisymmetric bluff bodies via time-recording DPIV Application of particle image velocimetry to helicopter vortex interactions Pulsed laser particle image velocimetry using a fibre-optic delivery system Automated fringe analysis for profilometric mass-transfer experiments.

The phenomena of parametric optics, which include the piezooptic effect still remain the fundamental basis for the development of various optical instruments. On the other hand, the existing experimental methods for studying the piezooptic properties of crystalline media are quite imperfect and lead to significant errors. These circumstances highlight the importance and relevance of the further development of piezooptics methods. This book will familiarize the reader with the 2D-polarimetric and interferometric methods in the study of the piezooptic effect under the action of inhomogeneous mechanical stresses. The use of these methods makes it possible to increase the accuracy of the piezooptic experiment and ensure the reliability of the results. In addition, this book presents the results of experimental studies of the photoelastic properties of crystals, which provide determination of the complete matrices of piezooptic and elastoptic coefficients.

Morphing Wings Technologies: Large Commercial Aircraft and Civil Helicopters offers a fresh look at current research on morphing aircraft, including industry design, real manufactured prototypes and certification. This is an invaluable reference for students in the aeronautics and aerospace fields who need an introduction to the morphing discipline, as well as senior professionals seeking exposure to morphing potentialities. Practical applications of morphing devices are presented—from the challenge of conceptual design incorporating both structural and aerodynamic studies, to the most promising and potentially flyable solutions aimed at improving the performance of commercial aircraft and UAVs. Morphing aircraft are multi-role aircraft that change their external shape substantially to adapt to a changing mission environment during flight. The book consists of eight sections as well as an appendix which contains both updates on main systems evolution (skin, structure, actuator, sensor, and control systems) and a survey on the most significant achievements of integrated systems for large commercial aircraft. - Provides current worldwide status of morphing technologies, the industrial development expectations, and what is already available in terms of flying systems - Offers new perspectives on wing structure design and a new approach to general structural design - Discusses hot topics such as multifunctional materials and auxetic materials - Presents practical applications of morphing devices
