Islam's fourth caliph, Ali, can be considered one of the most revered figures in Islamic history. His nearly universal portrayal in Muslim literature as a pious authority obscures centuries of contestation and the eventual rehabilitation of his character. In this book, Nebil Husayn examines the enduring legacy of the nawasib, early Muslims who disliked Ali and his descendants. The nawasib participated in politics and scholarly discussions on religion at least until the ninth century. However, their virtual disappearance in Muslim societies has led many to ignore their existence and the subtle ways in which their views subsequently affected Islamic historiography and theology. By surveying medieval Muslim literature across multiple genres and traditions including the Sunni, Mu'tazili, and Ibadi, Husayn reconstructs the claims and arguments of the nawasib and illuminates the methods that Sunni scholars employed to gradually rehabilitate the image of Ali from a villainous character to a righteous one.

The book highlights the fact that Islam does not encourage or incite intolerance of other faiths, and that it values sanctity of human life, regardless of religious affiliation, and abhors violence and extremism, as being perpetrated by the misguided muslim jihadists of al-Qaeda, ISIS, and their associated terrorist groups that have been wreaking atrocities on defenseless civilian populations of Muslim majority countries, including women and children. The book describes the inception, support, and unlimited funding of these groups by the Sunni Arab countries, and implores the Funders to discontinue their support, forthwith, to restore peace and stability to the marginalized communities, particularly the Shia Muslims of the world who have been subjected to persecution for centuries, ever since the advent of Islam in the seventh century, following the death of the Prophet of Islam in 623.The book also implores theWorld powers to end their tacit support of terrorism by seriously confronting the supporters of terrorist groups, without which the terrorism will not end.

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir was one of the most erudite Muslims of his age and played a significant role in the history of early Islam. At once a versatile leader and scholar, he was also an authority on the exegesis of the Qur'an, the traditions of the Prophet, and all matters relating to the rites, rituals, and practice of Islam. Using hitherto largely ignored Shi'i sources, Arzina R. Lalani explores al-Baqir's pivotal contributions to Islamic thought in its early formative period, contributions that were powerfully to affect developments in Shi'a law, theology, and religious practice. This study gives particular attention to al-Baqir's vital role in the formulation of the function and nature of the self.

After the demise of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the Muslims were divided regarding whom they should follow as their political and religious leader. The Sunnis followed the Prophet’s companions whilst the Shias followed the 12 Holy Imams chosen by God. The Shia Imams were from the lineage of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from his only surviving daughter, Lady Fatimah (SA). Successive Shia Imams lived amongst the Muslims for generations and guided them to the true Islamic teachings of the Prophet. All of the Shia Imams were respected by the Muslims for their spirituality, divine knowledge, and being the progeny of the Prophet. The Imams were a symbol of resistance against the injustice and oppression of the Umayyads and the Abbasids. As a result, the Imams endured many calamities and hardships. They were harassed, imprisoned, and martyred by the Umayyad and the Abbasid caliphs. This book reviews the lives of these 12 Holy Imams and provides an overview of their religious, social, and political achievements. The life and legacy of one of Mohammad’s closest confidants and Islam’s patron saint: Ali ibn Abi Talib Ali ibn Abi Talib is arguably the single most important spiritual and intellectual authority in Islam after prophet Mohammad. Through his teachings and leadership as fourth caliph, Ali nourished Islam. But Muslims are divided on whether he was supposed to be Mohammad’s political successor—and he continues to be a polarizing figure in Islamic history. Hassan Abbas provides a nuanced, compelling portrait of this towering yet divisive figure and the origins of sectarian division within Islam. Abbas reveals how, after Mohammad, Ali assumed the spiritual mantle of Islam to spearhead the movement that the prophet had led. While Ali’s teachings about wisdom, justice, and selflessness continue to be cherished by both Shia and Sunni Muslims, his pluralist ideas have been buried under sectarian agendas and power politics. Today, Abbas argues, Ali’s legacy and message stands against that of ISIS, Al-Qaeda, and Taliban.

Unfairly demonized by its adversaries—including the Sunni Arab countries, along with the US and EU—Iran is wary of the world's powers, after having been preyed upon to achieve other countries' political aims. Iranians are Shia Muslims, a minority sect comprising only 10 to 15% of the billion-plus Muslims in the world. Shias’ persecution and marginalization began in ancient times after the demise of the Prophet of Islam in 632, and has continued ever since. In modern times, their worldwide oppression has been spearheaded by Saudi Arabia—whose religion considers Shias to be apostates who deserve to be killed—and its allies, a persecution that began with the 1979 Iranian Revolution, which was followed by the unprovoked invasion of Iran by Iraq in 1980, and the successful defence of this invasion by Iran's revolutionary forces. Building upon this history, Iran, the Citadel of Shia Imams details the alarming aggression of the Sunni countries of the Middle East against the Shia-led regimes of Iraq, Syria, and Yemen—a relentless persecution of Shia Muslims and extreme injustice and aggression towards them, the details of which need to be brought to light. The unfortunate and reckless support of Saudi Arabia and its allies by the US and many other Western nations has perpetuated a blatant infringement upon the human rights of Iranians and Shia Muslims elsewhere. The oppression of Iranians continues in the form of toughened US sanctions, contrary to international law.

The defence of the Gulf has been a vital strategic concern for close on 100 years. The British first became involved in the Gulf to protect the sea routes to India and with the development of international air routes the Gulf became a crucial staging post. This book, first published in 1986, surveys the strategic issues in the defence of the Gulf from the earliest British involvement up to the Iraq-Iran war. It examines the British retreat from the Gulf and the imperial vestiges that were left behind. It considers the way in which American interests in the Gulf came to replace British interests and it analyses how American foreign policy has responded to this additional responsibility. The book also investigates the regional concerns of Gulf security and the intra-regional conflicts that have erupted in the Iraq-Iran war.
