Preface It was a great privilege and honour for me and my deputy chairman Professor Chris Raine to host the 10th International Conference on Cholesteatoma and Ear Surgery (Chole2016) in Edinburgh, Scotland. The Council of the British Society of Otology has helped me tremendously in the preparation of this conference. Over 1000 delegates from 54 countries attended Chole2016 on 5-8 June 2016. The scientific programme included 12 keynote lectures on the basic science of chronic ear diseases; 23 national symposium; 41 round tables; two live temporal bone dissections; 14 video instructional sessions; 18 free paper sessions and poster presentations. I sincerely thank all the faculties who contributed to the scientific programs and also the delegates who provided a lively discussion during the scientific sessions. It was the exchange of knowledge between the speakers and the delegates that makes the conference so worthwhile to me. The aim of Chole2016 was to: Bring basic science on chronic ear diseases to the clinicians. Achieve consensus in definitions, classification and staging of cholesteatoma. The first aim was fulfilled by a scientific programme that focused keynotes sessions on basic sciences. These proved delegates with a fascinating insight into the cellular biology, the role of chronic inflammation, genetic advances, middle ear mechanics/physiology, bacteriology, stem cell research and novel imaging technologies in the context of cholesteatoma. At Chole2016, the joint EAONO/JOS consensus document was presented to the international scientific community for the first time. It led to a lively and productive discussion. A consensus document on classification and staging of cholesteatoma has since been produced. The Proceedings of Chole2016 is available in paper book as well an-PDF (enhanced PDF with links) and EPUB (optimized for tablets). The electronic versions are freely downloadable for all. If you want a copy (paper book) Kugler Publications can also provide POD (Publishing on Demand) copies for a reasonable price. Finally, I am very much looking forward to seeing all of you at the 11th Conference in Shanghai in 2020! Matthew Yung

This is the story of 85 years in the life of Peter Dallos, a prominent neuroscientist and sculptor. It begins with childhood under the fascist regime in Hungary and recounts deprivations during the German occupation during the last year of World War 2, life under communist rule while in junior-high, high school and university. Hungarian high school and university life during the 1950s is described in detail. The upheaval of the 1956 anti-Soviet revolution is related, as well as escape, a new life and subsequent higher education in America. This is also the story of 50 years of groundbreaking research on the biology of the auditory system. The research career is illustrated by descriptions of various highlights from the production of the Dallos-lab, including the proof that outer hair cells are the cochlear amplifier and the discovery of prestin, the motor molecule in those cells which are responsible for the most fundamental capabilities of our hearing organ. During the last ten years of the story, a new career path emerged and is described, that of making welded steel and machined aluminum sculpture. All events and happenings are embedded in the telling about the author's personal life, his family, homes, travel and university and public citizenship.

Despite the changing demographics of the nation and a growing appreciation for diversity and inclusion as drivers of excellence in science, engineering, and medicine, Black Americans are severely underrepresented in these fields. Racism and bias are significant reasons for this disparity, with detrimental implications on individuals, health care organizations, and the nation as a whole. The Roundtable on Black Men and Black Women in Science, Engineering, and Medicine was launched at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in 2019 to identify key levers, drivers, and disruptors in government, industry, health care, and higher education where actions can have the most impact on increasing the participation of Black men and Black women in science, medicine, and engineering. On April 16, 2020, the Roundtable convened a workshop to explore the context for their work; to surface key issues and questions that the Roundtable should address in its initial phase; and to reach key stakeholders and constituents. This proceedings provides a record of the workshop.

Preface Childhood is the topic of the ninth World Glaucoma Association Consensus. There has been only sparse attention to the diagnosis and treatment of childhood glaucoma. Both pediatric ophthalmologists and glaucoma specialists provide care for such children. In some instances, they manage these individuals alone and, in others, the management is shared. For this consensus, the participation of both groups was solicited. The global faculty, consisting of leading authorities on the clinical and scientific aspects of childhood glaucoma, met in Vancouver on July 16, 2013, just prior to the World Glaucoma Congress, to discuss the reports and refine the consensus statements. As with prior meetings, it was a daunting task to seek and obtain consensus on such a complicated and nuanced subject. It is unclear how each of us decides how we practice, and evidence to guide us often is sparse. It is remarkable how few high level studies have been conducted on the management of childhood glaucoma. Hence, this consensus, as with the others, is based not only on the published literature, but also on expert opinion. Although consensus does not replace and is not a surrogate for scientific investigation, it does provide considerable value, especially when the desired evidence is lacking. The goal of this consensus was to provide a foundation for diagnosing and treating childhood glaucoma and how it can be best done in clinical practice. Identification of those areas for which we have little evidence and, therefore, the need for additional research also was a high priority. We hope that this consensus report will serve as a benchmark of our understanding. However, this consensus report, as with each of the others, is intended to be just a beginning. It is expected that it will be revised and improved with the emergence of new evidence. Robert N. Weinreb, Chair

The three-volume set LNCS 7510, 7511, and 7512 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer-Assisted Intervention, MICCAI 2012, held in Nice, France, in October 2012. Based on rigorous peer reviews, the program committee carefully selected 252 revised papers from 781 submissions for presentation in three volumes. The third volume includes 79 papers organized in topical sections on diffusion imaging: from acquisition to tractography; image acquisition, segmentation and recognition; image registration; neuroimage analysis; analysis of microscopic and optical images; image segmentation; diffusion weighted imaging; computer-aided diagnosis and planning; and microscopic image analysis.
