Danger pulsated in Lisa's veins as she viciously scoured her floor, trying to figure out what was really bothering her. Her five-year old daughter, Stephanie, needed to be protected, that much was clear. Desperation washed over her as she came up with nothing. But this much she knew: it was him. That night began the nightmares. She was being gang raped, and this scenario repeated nightly for years. What did it mean? The first flashback hit her while she was wide awake a couple weeks later. Her husband held her as she sobbed and tried to scrub the feelings off of her skin. James stayed faithfully by her side that night, and all the nights that came after. Nine months later the flashbacks took an evil turn. There was excruciating body pain and images of graves, candles, crosses, and white robed and hooded people whose faces were hidden in the shadows. Lisa decided that it was time to investigate and prove to herself that she was completely crazy, her idea of a better outcome than believing something like that could happen to her. James and Lisa travelled back to her home town and had the unexpected outcome of finding enough reasons to accept that she was, indeed, a survivor of Satanic Ritual Abuse (SRA). She returned home devastated. The next fifteen years were filled with ever worsening flashbacks. Her body fell apart and day to day survival took more energy that she had. She looked for help in the Christian community. She found very wonderful and caring counselors, but no one with experience with SRA survivors. Lisa realized that she could no longer endure being isolated from other survivors. She needed to find SRA survivors to help her with the process of healing. She found a community of them around the world, each one trying to survive a life decimated by the abuse. The one thing that remained a constant in her life was God. She and her family stayed in their local church throughout the years, and God gave her the strength to get out of bed each morning and face another day. The SRA abuse that Lisa endured was worse than being the victim in a horror movie. Lisa worked hard in counseling to try to get all of the healing that she could. Follow Lisa as she works through her past and comes to grip with her present. Watch her struggle to balance healing with the ability to stay functional in her life. See the cruel backlash from her family. Finally, see how she finds God's peace in the midst of it all.

The statistics are jarring. One in four women and one in six men have been sexually assaulted. But as sobering as these statistics are, they can't begin to speak to the darkness and grief experienced by the victims. The church needs compassionate and wise resources to care for those living in the wake of this evil. Other books attempt to address the journey from shame to healing for victims of sexual abuse, but few are from a Christian perspective and written for both child and adult victims. In Rid of My Disgrace, a couple experienced in counseling and care for victims of sexual assault present the gospel in its power to heal the broken and restore the disgraced. Justin and Lindsey Holcomb present a clear definition of sexual assault and outline a biblical approach for moving from destruction to redemption. Rid of My Disgrace applies a theology of redemption to the grief, shame, and sense of defilement victims experience. This book is primarily written for them, but can also equip pastors, ministry staff, and others to respond compassionately to those who have been assaulted. Part of the Re:Lit series.

As a girl, Alia Joy came face to face with weakness, poverty, and loss in ways that made her doubt God was good. There were times when it felt as if God had abandoned her. What she didn't realize then was that God was always there, calling her to abandon herself. In this deeply personal exploration of what it means to be "poor in spirit," Joy challenges our cultural proclivity to "pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps." She calls on readers to embrace true vulnerability and authenticity with God and with one another, showing how weakness does not disqualify us from inclusion in the kingdom of God--instead, it is our very invitation to enter in. Anyone who has struggled with feeling inadequate, disillusioned, or just too broken will find hope. This message is an antidote to despair, helping readers reclaim the ways God is good, even when life is anything but.

One out of three married women sitting in an average conservative Christian church is in a confusing and painful marriage relationship. Those women believe they are alone. I want them to know they aren't. They believe they can't find peace. I want them to know they can. They believe they don't have choices. I want them to know they do.This book isn't for the parents who raised them. It's not for the pastors who condemn them. It's not for the friends who don't understand them. And it's not for the partner who dehumanizes them. This book is for the woman in the pew who somehow, by God's divine intervention, finds it in her hand and has to catch her breath because she suddenly feels like she's free falling.I wrote this book just for you. Let's dig in.

I was turned off by the church at a very early age. I can remember listening to preachers speak about love of Jesus and his charity towards others. But as I looked at them, I often wondered why they were driving the latest model cars (often a Cadillac) and their fingers were covered with diamond rings. It appeared to me that they were receiving all of the charity and their people were only receiving broken promises.

Hell Minus One is different from other previously published memoirs by victims of satanic ritual abuse. Instead of distressing, heart-breaking accounts without collaborative or corroborative evidence, Anne's parents confessed their atrocities¿both in writing and verbally¿to clergymen, and to detectives from the Utah Attorney General's Office. Anne's suppressed memories, which erupted when she was in her mid-30s, were fully substantiated by her mother and stepfather.Hell Minus One is an unforgettable and moving story that takes the reader to more than just the depths of human depravity. After Anne learned the horrible and heartbreaking truth about her childhood, she embarked on an amazing inner journey of healing¿and forgiveness. She knew she had to forgive her tormentors, or they would own her¿and define who she is¿for the rest of her life. The steps she took to heal and forgive, and to commit herself to a new life of love and purpose, are inspirational and legendary. Her commitment to own and define her own life inspires readers to see their own challenges in a new light.
