Alfred North Whitehead is arguably the most original 20th-century philosopher of nature and metaphysics. In recent decades a number of physicists have produced ground-breaking new theories in fundamental physics influenced by his process philosophy. In contrast, few biologists are even aware that Whitehead’s radical rethinking of the Cartesian assumptions implicit in 19th-century sciences might be relevant to their enterprise. This book seeks to fill this gap by exploring how Whitehead’s process ontology might provide a new philosophical foundation for the biosciences of the 21st century. The central premise shared by all of the volume’s authors is the idea that all living processes are irreducible processes. Each chapter focuses on assumptions implicit in some of the core concepts of biology – such as organism, evolution, information, and teleology – that play crucial explanatory roles in the biosciences, but as metaphysical concepts fall outside its purview. The authors each identify important shortcomings implicit in contemporary biological paradigms and show how an approach grounded in a process-oriented metaphysics can avoid them.

Self-help expert Dave Pelzer teaches readers how to let go of the past and use negative experiences to make them stronger when tackling the future. "Learning from our prior experiences, we can, and should, aspire to fulfill our dreams, making life better not only for ourselves but for others around us," Dave writes in the introduction. "I am of the belief that you do not have to be a mayor of a major metropolis or CEO of a Fortune 500 company in order to take a stand for your convictions; to lead, rally, or educate others for your cause; or to maintain a vision that will pave the way for other generations to come. The everyday, hardworking folks, God bless 'em, have and always will continue to, day in and day out, truly make an impact on their families, communities, jobs, America, and the world as a whole." Dave Pelzer walks readers through the process of learning how to turn the experience gained from past hurts into the power to live a better life and help others do the same with his trademark wisdom, support, and tough love.

South Asian American men are not usually depicted as ideal American men. They struggle against popular representations as either threatening terrorists or geeky, effeminate computer geniuses. To combat such stereotypes, some use sports as a means of performing a distinctly American masculinity. Desi Hoop Dreams focuses on South Asian-only basketball leagues common in most major U.S. and Canadian cities, to show that basketball, for these South Asian American players is not simply a whimsical hobby, but a means to navigate and express their identities in 21st century America. The participation of young men in basketball is one platform among many for performing South Asian American identity. South Asian-only leagues and tournaments become spaces in which to negotiate the relationships between masculinity, race, and nation. When faced with stereotypes that portray them as effeminate, players perform sporting feats on the court to represent themselves as athletic. And though they draw on black cultural styles, they carefully set themselves off from African American players, who are deemed “too aggressive.” Accordingly, the same categories of their own marginalization—masculinity, race, class, and sexuality—are those through which South Asian American men exclude women, queer masculinities, and working-class masculinities, along with other racialized masculinities, in their effort to lay claim to cultural citizenship. One of the first works on masculinity formation and sport participation in South Asian American communities, Desi Hoop Dreams focuses on an American popular sport to analyze the dilemma of belonging within South Asian America in particular and in the U.S. in general.

Centuries of vampire hunts have ensured vampires live on the brink of extinction. Only the Goya clan survives by working as vampire assassins for unscrupulous humans who want to eliminate their enemies. The vampires are in demand because their killings are unsolvable. The Goyas have a fetish of their own, a sadistic need to feast on human flesh. St. Anya's vampire hunters are the only ones who can stop them. What has a writer, an old man and a dog to do with it? Nothing, until a vampire abducts the writer's best friend. Tossed between fear and loyalty, Artesia Cane pushes herself into the horrific war between the living and the undead by joining forces with St. Anya's, a mysterious old man with immense supernatural powers and Stalkers, an unusual breed of vampire killers, to rescue her friend. The vampire hunt culminates into the ultimate battle where the hunters discover they are betrayed. No one can trust anyone. The Blood Paintings is a horror-action novel of a nightmarishly enduring tale of the test of loyalty, love and most of all, faith and hope under the duress of the eternal battle between good and evil.

The KI of skiing is the ultimate booklet on Centering and the use of KI to obtain insane speeds on a pair of ski''s; with some degree of safety. For those who are not insane it gives you the mental skills to enjoy our sport to a very high degree. All skiing was done at Mount Shasta on a very narrow Black Diamond ski slope. The ski used was a Green 203-CM. G.S.(World Cup) by Elan and a very old Nordica ski boot held on by Look Bindings. The pictures help illustrate the ski skills that hone your balance, teach subtle Edging skills and correct hip movements. By adding the "Real Secrets of Skiing".... Centering and Ki.... You have both the physical and mental skills to excel in the sport of Skiing. Even tho the booklet is small in size I think you will find that it gives you the knowledge to make huge gains in your skiing skills. As your balance and edging skills improve and along with being centered and using KI, your turns will have more power. Along with that power comes faster and cleaner turns(less sliding). The biggest improvement will be a reduced number of falls you make by being in your "Center". There is a rumor, (I don''t know who started it!), that if you are in your Center, the opposite sex will be strongly attracted to you....! I have tried to pass on the mental skills that should be at the core of great skiers. Without these mental skills you are just another Hacker that will never enjoy the pure thrill of scaring yourself silly.... T those that have the patience and courage to read and apply what I have imparted to your deeper understanding.... ....Go and become great skiers!....The KI of Skiing is my gift to the sport of snow skiing. I hope many read it and actually use the knowledge within. It may make the sport a little safer and enjoyable for all.... Will do clinics and on the hill demonstration''s. Must provide transportation, lodging, food, and an obscene amount of cash.... Dale Mollenhauer 528-670 Little Valley Rd. Little Valley, CA. 96056 If any questions about your skiing or the booklet, send a $20.00 check and S.A.S.E. to the above address.
