Excerpt from One Hundredth Anniversary Commemorating the Building of St. James Church, Wilmington, N. C: April 30th and May 1st, 1939, the Two Hundred and Tenth Year of the Parish; Historical Notices Up to this time (1747) the congregation in this town had used the county court-house as a house of public worship - having as yet no more suitable place in which their clergyman could officiate. Among those who contributed to supply this want, the name of Michael Higgins deserves a grateful remembrance. This person was a faithful and well-tried friend of the Church in this place; and to his county the congregation are to this day indebted for the ground which forms the last earthly resting place of their departed relatives and friends. Excerpt from In God's Vineyard for Two Hundred Years: Bi-Centennial Anniversary of St. John's Lutheran Church, Cabarrus County, North Carolina While growing stronger through the years, St. John's has given large numbers of its membership to the establishment of other congregations and by letter of transfer of individuals to other churches. The following list, which may not tell the full story, will indicate to some extent how much she gave: New Bethel in Stanly County, 1806; St. Stephen's, 1837; St. James, ' 1843; Trinity, 1857; Holy Trinity, 1870; Mt. Olive, 1878; Pros perity, 1879; Mt. Hermon and Cold Water, 1881; Mt. Gilead and St. Mar tin's, all in Cabarrus County. Quite a number moved to Illinois and had part in organizing congregations there. During the great revival move ments the Methodist Church drew upon her membership. Yet the ongoing life of the congregation has never been stronger than today in internal activities arid support of the whole work of the church.
