Excerpt from On Surrey Hills The volumes 'woodland, Moor, and Stream' and the 'annals of a Fishing Village, ' edited by me from the Notes of A Son of the -marshes, have met with so satisfactory a 'recognition of their merits, that both author and editor are encouraged to venture upon another series of sketches. The Son of the Marshes has now established for himself the reputation of a keen and enthusiastic student of bird, animal, and fish life in the woodlands, glades, and streams of our southern counties; and it has been the aim of the editor in. Excerpt from The Surrey Hills But before the Roman legions ever flashed their shields before the astonished vision of our Iberian ancestors, the North Downs were used as the road from the west of England to the sea-coast at Kent by the British tin merchants, who carried their ware from Cornwall to the port of Sandwich. It was this old track that the pilgrims used in doing penance at the shrine of Canterbury, which the Saxons and the Danes made use of when they fought their bloody battles on the Slopes of Botley and Tandridge Hills, and finally on the slopes of Leith Hill. This old track along the North Downs recalls the great name of England more than anything else in the whole of our British Empire. It is the England of Caesar, of Alfred the Great, of Saint Augustine, of Harold, of William the Conqueror, of Chaucer, of Jack Cade. It is the England of the great barons, who were in their own province stronger than kings. Blechingley, Reigate, Betch worth, Guildford, and Farnham became their castle homes. Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Excerpt from Highways and Byways: In Surrey Surrey is threaded by such a net of railways that the deliberate choosing of a route, with definite centres and points of de parture, is unnecessary. But those who believe that the best way to see any country is to walk through it will find that, as a general rule, the book and its chapters are divided, sometimes naturally, sometimes perhaps a little perversely, into the compass of a day's walking. My own plan has been simple enough: it has been to set out in the morning and walk till it was dark, and then take the train back to where I came from. Others will be able to plan far more comprehensive journeys by motor-car, or by bicycling, or on horseback - though not many, perhaps, ride horses by Surrey roads today. But only by walking would it be possible to explore much of the country. You would never, except by walking, come at the meaning or read the story of the ancient Way, or the Pilgrims' Road that follows it only on foot can you climb the hills as you please, or follow the path where it chooses to take you. It is only by walking that you will get to the best of the Thursley heather, or the Bagshot pines and gorse, or the whortleberries in the wind on Leith Hill, or the primroses of the Fold country, or the birds that call through the quiet of the Wey Canal - though there, too, you may take a boat it is one of the prettiest of the byways. The walker through Surrey sees the best; the others see not much more than the road and what stands on the road. Excerpt from Allegiance, Vol. 1 of 2: A Novel Down among the Surrey hills, not forty miles from London, with all its hurrying life and ceaseless confusion, such a spot is to be found. As you look at Nortons, partly hidden amongst the great trees that surround it, with walls covered with ivy and Virginian creeper, and roof yellow with the lichen and green with the moss of centuries, you feel at once that this is one of Nature's favoured retreats, that here she has sheltered herself against the modern invader, and that Nortons has stood, as indeed it has, for hundreds of years, just as it stands now, quiet and undisturbed.
