Introduction:This article has stemmedfrom a question, which was asked about the creation of 'Nafs' and how it relates to 'Ruh'? The topic is extremely complex and has not been dealt with in the previous articles, particlularly when topics of 'Irfan/Maurifat' were explainedwith in the past.1We very much appreciatethis question, as after analysingof Arabic and English translations, it was found that almost in all English translations, including ours, several'Arabic' terms are not translated properly. However, theless than ideal translation of the some of the Islamic terms, would not significantly affect the general reader but will certainly not help in developing a'higher level Maurifat'(understanding the Divine Instructions -mysticism.)The compilation of the Ahadith in this articleis by no means complete as only a fraction of the Ahadith dealing with the subject are cited. Also for the ease of the readers, the Islamic'terms'under discussion, are highlighted in lengthy Ahadith (as most of the readers will only be interestedin the sentences in which these Arabic terms are explained). At a time when there is increasing need to offer psychotherapeutic approaches that accommodate clients’ religious and spiritual beliefs, and acknowledge the potential for healing and growth offered by religious frameworks, this book explores psychology from an Islamic paradigm and demonstrates how Islamic understandings of human nature, the self, and the soul can inform an Islamic psychotherapy. Drawing on a qualitative, grounded theory analysis of interviews with Islamic scholars and clinicians, this unique volume distils complex religious concepts to reconcile Islamic theology with contemporary notions of psychology. Chapters offer nuanced explanations of relevant Islamic tradition and theological sources, consider how this relates to Western notions of psychotherapy and common misconceptions, and draw uniquely on first-hand data to develop a new theory of Islamic psychology. This, in turn, informs an innovative and empirically driven model of practice that translates Islamic understandings of human psychology into a clinical framework for Islamic psychotherapy. An outstanding scholarly contribution to the modern and emerging discipline of Islamic psychology, this book makes a pioneering contribution to the integration of the Islamic sciences and clinical mental health practice. It will be a key resource for scholars, researchers, and practicing clinicians with an interest in Islamic psychology and Muslim mental health, as well as religion, spirituality and psychology more broadly.

"Islam & Psychology: Principles and Practices" by Mohd Nasir Masroom is an insightful and comprehensive exploration of the integration of Islamic teachings with contemporary psychological principles. Drawing on the author’s extensive experience as a senior lecturer in Islamic Psychology and Counseling, this book delves into the rich and nuanced intersection of faith, spirituality, and mental health. The book is divided into 20 engaging chapters, each offering a deep dive into critical aspects of Islamic psychology. It begins by exploring the foundational interface between psychology and religion, emphasizing the often-overlooked dimension of spirituality. Early chapters introduce key Islamic concepts such as al-Ruh (the spirit), al-Qalb (the heart), al-Nafs (the self), and al-Aqal (the intellect), providing readers with a thorough understanding of the Islamic view of human nature (Fitrah) and personality. As the book progresses, it offers a detailed examination of the development of embryonic stages, the significant contributions of five eminent scholars of Islamic psychology, and the profound implications of the pillars of faith (iman) and Islam on individual well-being. The discussion extends to the spiritual science of Tasawwuf, exploring spiritual heart diseases and the illnesses of the soul, and providing insights into their spiritual cures. The book also addresses practical applications of Islamic psychology in therapeutic settings, with dedicated chapters on Islamic counseling, psychotherapy, and mental health. These sections highlight how Islamic teachings can be effectively utilized in counseling and therapy, considering the cultural and religious contexts of the patients. A unique exploration of the connection between Jinn, Ruqyah (spiritual healing), and mental health further enriches this discussion. In the final chapters, the book turns its focus to the emotional aspects of the human experience. It examines emotions such as patience, gratitude, acceptance, trust in Allah, bravery, fear, happiness, sadness, love, and hate, all through the lens of Islamic teachings. These discussions offer a holistic view of how emotions are understood, managed, and nurtured in Islam. "Islam & Psychology: Principles and Practices" is a valuable resource for students, scholars, and professionals in the fields of psychology and Islamic studies, as well as for anyone interested in the ways in which faith and spirituality influence mental health and well-being. By bridging classical Islamic knowledge with modern psychological practices, this book offers a unique perspective that not only enhances our understanding of psychology but also enriches our approach to mental health in a way that is deeply rooted in faith and spirituality. This book integrates research in positive psychology, Islamic psychology, and Muslim wellbeing in one volume, providing a view into the international experiential and spiritual lives of a religious group that represents over 24% of the world’s population. It incorporates Western psychological paradigms, such as the theories of Jung, Freud, Maslow, and Seligman with Islamic ways of knowing, while highlighting the struggles and successes of minoritized Muslim groups, including the LGBTQ community, Muslims with autism, Afghan Shiite refugees, and the Uyghur community in China. It fills a unique position at the crossroad of multiple social science disciplines, including the psychology of religion, cultural psychology, and positive psychology. By focusing on the ways in which spirituality, struggle, and social justice can lead to purpose, hope, and a meaningful life, the book contributes to scholarship within the second wave of positive psychology (PP 2.0) that aims to illustrate a balance between positive and negative aspects of human experience. While geared towards students, researchers, and academic scholars of psychology, culture, and religious studies, particularly Muslim studies, this book is also useful for general audiences who are interested in learning about the diversity of Islam and Muslims through a research-based social science approach.
