Katey is in elementary school. Her class has show and tell once a week. The kids usually bring in toys and other stuff from home. Katey decided she wanted all of her classmates to see that she has a cat named Old Man. She loves her cat which is why she wanted to show him off to everyone. Katey went to her teacher, Mrs. Twisdale, and asked if everyone can bring in their pets for show and tell. Mrs. Twisdale got the ok from the school principal. Permission slips were sent home with the children for the parents to sign plus a parent had to help each child bring in his/her pet. Since each child had a pet, it took several days for show and tell. Some of the children had dogs, cats, rabbits, etc. When it was Katey's day, Old Man was there. Old Man put a new meaning to show and tell. Read the book and find out what happens when it was Old Man's turn. It makes good reading for the parents and their children.

Whether it’s a Fourth of July in rural Maine, the opening game of the 2015 World Series, editorial exchanges with John Updike, a letter to a son, or his award-winning essay on aging, “This Old Man,” what links the pieces is Angell’s unique perceptions and humor, his utter absence of self-pity, and his appreciation of friends and colleagues encountered over a fruitful career unlike any other.

I remember my first day of school first as a student and then as a teacher. I was even more nervous as a teacher. I knew the material. I understood what I was supposed to teach. But I felt unprepared. When I walked into that classroom, I had no idea how to get my kids to buy what I was selling. After two years of uncertainty and self-doubt, I decided to stop trying to be something I wasn't. I started being me. No more referring to my class as students. They were now “my kids.” A wise, veteran teacher once told me, “Get your kids to love you and they will do whatever you ask.” That's exactly what we did. We started building real connections with the kids and their parents. The kids bought in. A lot of the parents did too. This family environment created daily rewards for all of us. These daily rewards were the reason we all wanted to be there. Open the book. Read the first chapter. Then maybe the chapter on daily rewards. Relate it to your own experiences. See how we created a 'Triangle of Trust.' See how we created a family each year for eighteen years. A classroom filled with kindness, compassion, and a lot of laughter and joy. A classroom where good learning flourishes. It works. It's fun. It's a real family. Your family. I hope you enjoy it. I still miss opening the door each morning and turning on the light.

A Crime Novella. When two young girls disappear with a trunk-load of pot, unaware their payload has been packed with an extra five kilos of cocaine, a lovable loser persuades a sociopathic killer to pursue them across Northern California on a violent, twisted goose-chase that ends in a horrific place none of them could have foreseen. Praise for PIGGYBACK: “Piggyback restores noir to its dark kingdom, a rollicking pumping novel of losers, psychos, stone killers, idiotic amateur rip-off artists, and a road-movie of a story that is as fast as it is beautifully written. Think Don Winslow’s Savages meets Christopher Cook’s Robbers and you have the dark read of the year.” —Ken Bruen, two-time Shamus Award-winner “Piggyback is a wild frenzy of drugs, violence, and crazy plot twists. Somebody needs to make the film version.” Tony DuShane, author of Confessions of a Teenage Jesus Jerk
