Excerpt from Reminiscences of Greenwich A half century ago my father's shop stood a few rods east of our home in old Historic Greenwich. It was a large two-story building, with an attic, having sheds and low build ings attached to it The first floor was the wheelwright shop, where were six benches with a vise attachment; a workman or an apprentice at every bench. The music of saw and plane and stroke of hammer was heard every day during working hours, and the new sh'aven wood gave out as delicate and sweet an odor as new mown hay. The ground floor was carpeted with wood shavings, which were carried out for fire kindlings. The exterior of the building retained its color of natural wood, darkened by the passing years of time. In the interior the workmen had tested their paint brushes on the doors and window sills, giving them an oriental dash of color. On the west end was an enclosed shed, and upon its flat roof the heavy crane in front of the building would swing the vehicle up too, or down from, as occasion demanded. On the roof of this shed stood a ladder, the only way of access to the attic. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Colonial and Old Houses, of Greenwich, New Jersey The great interest in later years to everything pertaining to the early history of our country has been an incentive to write the history of the colonial and old houses of Greenwich. The old town having been the place of my nativity, and home for many years, it has been my privilege to cross the threshold of many of the ancient houses, some of them the homes of valued friends, from whom I have learned much of the past. I have prepared the following pages with much care, endeavoring to preserve some of the history of that portion of the past which pertains to the home of the early settler. From the early records of deeds and wills preserved in the archives of the state, and now accessible by their publication, I have found names and dates not otherwise obtainable. I also wish to acknowledge my indebtedness to the Vineland Historical and Antiquarian Society, for the use of its valuable library. It is hoped that these glimpses of days long gone, and the record of men and women who have made the old houses their dwelling place, may be of interest to the present generation, who should hold as a precious inheritance the memory of their ancestors, the early settlers of Greenwich. Excerpt from The Palace and the Hospital, or Chronicles of Greenwich, Vol. 2 of 2 Through the tower a tiny quadrangle is reached, surrounded by an arcade like a cloister. The pointed arches have a modern look, but the' short, wide win dows above, with their stone mullions, are decidedly old. The establishment contains a warden and twenty men, twelve from Greenwich and eight from N or folk; but the society may be somewhat melancholy, as all the men are widowers. There is a large garden at the back, from which the widowers are allowed to sell fruit and vegetables.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Old Age Poverty in Greenwich Village: A Neighborhood Study The above facts are familiar to social students, but it remained for Miss Nassau to bring together convincing illustrations of them for our own city of New York. Her study embraces one hundred of the aged neighbors Whom she learned to know as a resident of Greenwich House. Greenwich Village is neither better nor worse than the other districts of New York in which wage eamers predominate. If Miss Nassau's description is true to the facts for this part of New York, it may be accepted as substantially true to the facts for the city at large.
