Excerpt from Old Friends Being Literary Recollections of Other Days My book of other Days, containing Chronicles and Memories of Actors, has been received by the public with gratifying favor, and that favor has impelled me to act on a suggestion, coming from several sources, that I should write a companion book, containing Chronicles and Memories of Authors. The result is this book of old Famnns. I was introduced into the companionship of authors early in life, having published my first book, - which led to acquaintance with some of them, - in 1854, and I have had friendly intercourse with many of them, extending over a period of more than fifty years. Some of my recollections of that intercourse are here expressed, with all the kind ness that is consistent with truth, and perhaps my readers will find a little pleasure in rambling with me along the grass-grown pathways of the Past, where the idols of my youthful enthusiasm and the comrades of my pen remain unchanged.
