In the early 1970s a start was made on a broad review of what was known or could be surmised about sedimentation by strong tidal currents on modern continental shelves. This task was initiated because of the need to define the next phase of research in this field by the Marine Geology Group of the Institute of Oceano graphic Sciences. Related indications of the longer term evolution of the deposits were sought by close reference to the nature of modern tidal currents and the supposedly offshore tidal deposits of ancient seas. As the review grew in completeness it became of increasing relevance to a wider audience so it was amalgamated with the new results and shaped as a book. The fruits of the long-continued discussions within and outside the Geology Group have served to improve understanding of the processes and products of offshore tidal current sedimentation. On the other hand, the discussions have blurred the parts played by the people concerned. This applies to all chapters in varying degrees, but is especially true for Chapters 3, 4 and 5. The authorship attributed to each chapter therefore seeks to reflect those who were most con cerned with it.

The first edition appeared fourteen years ago. Since then there have been significant advances in our science that warrant an updating and revision of Sand and Sandstone. The main framework of the first edition has been retained so that the reader can begin with the mineralogy and textural properties of sands and sandstones, progress through their organization and classification and their study as a body of rock, to consideration of their origin-prove nance, transportation, deposition, and lithification-and finally to their place in the stratigraphic column and the basin. The last decade has seen the rise of facies analysis based on a closer look at the stratigraphic record and the recognition of characteristic bed ding sequences that are the signatures of some geologic process-such as a prograding shallow-water delta or the migration of a point bar on an alluvial floodplain. The environment of sand deposition is more closely determined by its place in such depositional systems than by criteria based on textural characteristics-the "fingerprint" approach. Our revi sion reflects this change in thinking. As in the geological sciences as a whole, the concept of plate tectonics has required a rethinking of our older ideas about the origin and accumu lation of sediments-especially the nature of the sedimentary basins.

The coast is a dynamic geomorphological system. Studying the coast as a system provides a framework within which interactions between many features and complex processes can be considered and expressed. A system is a state at any time defined by its variables (Woodroffe 2002)Morphology is very appropriate measure of the state of a coastal system. Accretion and erosion are the morphological states of a beach. The terms like summer beach profile and winter beach profile (King 1972) or reflective and dissipative beaches are also used to describe these states. Tidal deposits have been a specific research topic for about 40 years, and whilst this has resulted in a proliferation of papers in scientific journals, there have only been a few book-length syntheses. Over the years, tidal sedimentology has been reinforced by fluid mechanics and numerical modelling but has remained rooted in facies and stratigraphic studies. Recent developments in tidal sedimentology lean toward a more quantitative assessment of the imprint of tides in the facies record of intertidal and shallow subtidal areas. The report presents information developed in the course of a multi-year investigation of the need for shore protection and storm damage reduction. The study area was 8.6 miles of the Pacific coast, known as Ocean Beach, in the City of San Francisco, CA. The study area extended from Cliff House to Fort Funston. The beach portion of the study area is in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service. Facilities threatened with damage included the Great Highway, parking lots of the GGNRA, a buried storm and sewer water transport box, a sewer pumping plant and ultimately houses and businesses. The report records the Ocean Engineering, Economic, and Geotechnical studies used to formulate and analyze a variety of alternative measures, including structural seawalls and revetments, as well as beach and dune nourishment. The final analysis indicated that most of the study area, while not absolutely safe, had a low probability of erosion. In the one area with a possible federal interest, the sponsor was unable to agree to cost share at the time of the report. Therefore the study was terminated. The sponsor will pursue other measures not requiring federal cost sharing.
