Excerpt from Common Things and Elementary Science in the Form of Object Lessons The object of the author in publishing this volume is to supply teachers with a manual of matter and method on Common Things and the Elements of Science, thus providing materials for courses of lessons on Elementary Science as a class subject. Three points have been kept in view in pre paring the lessons; first, the production of full and accurate information; second, the arrangement of the matter in its teaching order; and third, the indication of the method by which the ideas are to be worked out. In many cases the particular experiments to be performed, the questions to be put, and the diagrams to be used are given. It has, of course, been necessary to make a selection of subjects in each section of the book, preference, therefore, has been given to those which are likely to come under a child's notice in his daily life, the study of which will help to cultivate careful observation and intelligent inquiry; habits which will tend to make the individual exact in his statements, correct in his judgments, and useful in his future avocations. The subjects chosen embrace all those mentioned in the Code. All the lessons have been worked out from original sources; those on manufactures and minerals, from notes made while visiting factories and mines. The statistics have been taken from the latest official returns. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
