Excerpt from Nuggets of Gold Bret Harte's fancies about early gold discoveries seem to have been far outdone by the recent Alaskan gold fields - lakes of oil, mountains of gold and oceans of pearls. A veritable El Dorado has been opened up. Rumors thereof have thrilled the world. People from all nations, walks and conditions in life have been flocking that way, till homes have been broken up, business abandoned and communities depopulated. This vast army of pilgrims cannot be accounted for simply on the ground of the El Dorado; but rather it demonstrates the susceptibility of human nature to the shining ore, or the "world's treasure." Indeed, human nature hankers after things. Several years ago a Russian princess died in Paris leaving a million dollars or more to the individual that would live in her tomb a year. Several undertook the project, but gave up in despair. Whether the prize has yet been won we never learned. Excerpt from Famous Gold Nuggets of the World In these days of wonderful gold discoveries one is apt to forget the big finds of the past, which set the world wild with excitement and gave such impetus to mining about half a century ago. This brief account of famous gold nuggets will help to revive the memories of the golden days of Australia and California, and to show how history tends to repeat itself in gold mining as well as in other mundane affairs. The data has been gathered from many sources, involving a large amount of research, which extended over the face of the globe. In procuring this information the compiler has corresponded with some two hundred persons, to many of whom he is indebted for whatever credit may be attached to his efforts. He ventures to believe that the result will be found of deep interest to all concerned in mining and mining matters. For much of the material used the compiler is indebted to the Engineering and Mining Journal and American Mining News, of New York; the Mining and Scientific Press, of San Francisco; Mining Reporter, of Denver; Mining Record, of Colorado Springs; the Australian Mining Standard, of Melbourne; Mining and Metallurgical Journal, Los Angeles, California; ex-United States Mining Commissioner R. W. Raymond, and representative mining engineers residing in all parts of the world. With one exception, no mention is made of nuggets found in South America or Mexico, the compiler having been unable to collect reliable data from these countries, excepting as to their gross gold and silver output. Excerpt from Nome Nuggets: Some of the Experiences of a Party of Gold Seekers in Northwestern Alaska in 1900 This caused a great deal of excitement among the employes of the stores at St. Michael. In five days many had secured dog teams and provisions, and were on their way over the ice to the new land of gold. In three weeks the place was nearly deserted, the same being the case with other small camps nearby. The news spread to the villages along the Yukon. Soon scores of dog teams, laden with provisions, passed through St. Michael, en route for this icy Eldorado.
