When Sherlock Holmes wrestled with Dr Moriarty on the Reichenbach Falls, he was employing a system of self-defence that was all the rage in Victorian Britain. In an age when footpads and fogle-snatchers meant a man of breeding took his life in his hands when walking across town, a martial arts craze took hold that did not escape Conan-Doyle's keen eye for research. Schools sprung up all over London, chief among which was E.W. Barton-Wright's "Bartitsu" method. The Sherlock Holmes School of Self-Defence commemorates Barton-Wright's exploits and the fighting techniques of the famous sleuth himself (though Conan-Doyle mischiveously spelled it Baristu). Learn how to defend yourself with an overcoat, cane, or umbrella, or even to wield your bicycle against an attacker. Wonderful illustrations based on original photographs instruct the reader in skills that range from the sublime to the elementary.

The martial art known as Bartitsu originated in England during the late 19th century. Integrating components from multiple combat disciplines such as jujitsu, savate (French kickboxing), and stick fighting, was the progenitor of this system. The primary objective behind the development of Bartitsu was to provide gentlemen with a comprehensive self-defense system to counteract street violence and assaults. In recent years, there has been a renewed surge in interest regarding this system, especially among martial arts devotees with a penchant for historical combat systems, which contributed to its initial surge in popularity. "Bartitsu" is an amalgamation of "Jujitsu", signifying the system's incorporation of both Western and Eastern martial arts principles. Practical techniques for armed and unarmed combat are prioritized, and strikes, throws, joint grips, and grappling maneuvers are utilized.

Until the publication of 'Tricks of Self-Defence' in about 1910, most, if not all, of the English language books on jujitsu and connected martial arts dealt more with the systems in question. These were often quite complicated and took time to master. W. H. Collingridge's concept was to publish a more practical, illustrated textbook for the everyday person in the street, outlining the effective applications that anyone can easily pick up in order to defend themselves. The result was this book which graphically outlines thirty-three 'Standing Positions', and nine 'Ground Tricks'. All of these require little space to practise and notably some use arm or wrist grappling, while applying pressure to nerve or pressure points. In these respects, 'Tricks of Self-Defence, A Useful Book for Everybody', is considered to be the first of its genre in English to record Japanese techniques of applied practical self-defence.

Original reissue of this manual of close combat of 1919. Excerpt from the book: " It has been necessary to revise my book on In-fighting for the U. S. Army, which was published as a text on the subject at Camp Dix, N. J., in order to have it conform to the needs of the civilian as a means of self-defense against the thug or thief. That a practical method of self-defense for civilians serves a need is a well-established fact. And that the system best adapted to one's need should be other than a knowledge of the so-called manly art of self-defense, or boxing, is one of the lessons learned from this great war."

"Get tough, get down in the gutter, win at all costs... I teach what is called 'Gutter Fighting.' There's no fair play, no rules except one: kill or be killed." - W.E. Fairbairn Learn self-defense from one of the most badass hand-to-hand combat experts the world has ever seen! W. E. Fairbairn is an absolute legend in the world of martial arts. He is credited with inventing the SWAT team, riot police, bullet-proof vest, and the Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife used to this day by Special Forces, Marines, and Armies around the world. After enlisting in the British Royal Marines at age 16, Fairbairn spent the years between 1903 and 1907 stationed in Japan and Korea eagerly studying every form of martial art he came across. Fairbairn then accepted a position as a patrolman with the Shanghai Municipal Police department, which, in the early days of the 20th Century, was struggling against seemingly endless swarms of organized criminals and violent gangsters. Tasked with training the underfunded department, Fairbairn wove together his military training, mastery of Eastern martial arts, and everything he learned from personal experience street-fighting deadly criminals into a new style of no-holds-barred, 'gutter-fighting' called Defendu. In the 35 years he spent walking the streets of Shanghai, Fairbairn allegedly survived over 600 physical engagements, the violence of which left his body covered head-to-toe with the scars of knife and bullet wounds. Upon leaving Shanghai Fairbairn accepted a job to train elite agents for the British Secret Service in anticipation of WWII. Written in 1931, after 20 years on the gritty, lawless streets of Shanghai, Scientific Self-Defense is a no-nonsense guide to protecting yourself by any means necessary against any conceivable assailant. With hundreds of diagrams and photos illustrating Defendu's time-honored defensive maneuvers and brutal retaliatory attacks, Scientific Self-Defense will teach you everything you need to know about kicking ass and taking names!

This unique system is a martial art and self-defense system used in the armed forces, law enforcement, and for personal development. "Combato" techniques can be learned by anyone and are not based on physical strength or athletic ability. The average person will benefit from the practice by learning practical self-defense skills but also increase their self-confidence and well-being. A great addition to any martial arts library. Combato had its beginning in the Liverpool theatres with jujutsu demonstrations by travelling Japanese wrestlers, Yukio Tani and Taro Miyake. As a boy, Underwood idolized these experts, and rapidly established himself as a prodigy. Underwood was frequently requested by American and Canadian Law Enforcement Agencies to teach his Combato system during World War II After the war had ended he refused Underwood modified the system to remove its lethal applications and instead focus on the Law Enforcement applications of self-defence, compliance and control tactics and called it "Defendo." Between 1980 and 1981 Underwood appeared four times on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. He also appeared at that time on all of Hollywood's major talk shows including Real People, That's Incredible, and Merv Griffin. In 1980 a short documentary film about Underwood's life and work, entitled Don't Mess With Bill was nominated for an Oscar at the 53rd Academy Awards in 1981.

Practical Self-Defense Anyone Can Learn, Taught By a Master of Street Combat After serving as a Marine in World War II, legendary close-quarter combatives teacher and martial arts practitioner Charles Nelson opened his own School of Self Defense in New York City. Every day, New Yorkers faced the threat of violent attacks, assaults, and muggings. Recognizing that danger, Nelson knew that average people would benefit from learning how to protect themselves. For five decades he taught practical fighting techniques for real-world situations. Nelson's famous evade-and-strike method taught evasion and avoidance first, de-escalation next, and then strategies for self-defense and striking back-when necessary. Combining the popular "Little Red Manual" and "Little Gray Manual" booklets into a single volume, this comprehensive, illustrated book provides a complete picture of Nelson's fighting techniques. Drawing from his personal experience in unarmed, hand-to-hand combat and representing the skills he taught in person, it contains a wide variety of simple and effective martial arts moves, ranging from basic blocks and traps to advanced swivel punches and counter-strikes. A foreword by a WWII combatives expert and fighting instructor Carl Cestari, one of Nelson's former pupils, provides a colorful backstory about "Charlie" Nelson's life and techniques. Appealing to both experienced martial arts students and beginners, this is a must-have classic for every martial artist, and self-defense students and instructors. Studying the moves in this manual could literally mean the difference between life or death. "The volumes of letters written to Charlie by former pupils, expressing gratitude for teaching these life-saving tactics and methods, attest to the efficacy of the system." -Carl Cestari, from the Foreword
